Columbus North edges Bloomington South 36-32 in girls basketball

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Seniors Jenna Borger and Kenzie Patberg each scored 10 points Saturday (Jan. 13) to lift the Columbus North girls basketball team to a 36-32 victory over Bloomington South in Memorial Gym.

                Sophomore Tessa Lomax contributed six points and freshman Alexa McKinley provided five points for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 15-4 overall and clinched at least a share of the Conference Indiana championship at 6-0. Sophomore Annie Anderson added four points for CN.

                Junior Addisyn Blackwell netted a game-high 14 points and sophomore Lauren Conner had 13 points for the Panthers (9-9, 3-2). Cameron Gillard completed Bloomington South’s scoring with five points.

                Borger scored six points and Lomax netted four points as Columbus North took a 12-6 lead in the first quarter. McKinley tallied five points and Patberg four points in the second quarter as the Bull Dogs extended their advantage to 25-11 at intermission.

                Conner scored six points and Blackwell had three points in the third quarter as the Panthers closed to 29-20 at the third stop.

                Blackwell scored six points in the fourth quarter as the visitors cut their deficit to just one late in the game. But Anderson scored a big basket during the BS run, junior Nadia Lomax hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it 34-32 and Borger countered with 2-of-2 free throws in the last 10 seconds to push the margin back to four and seal the decision.

                In the JV game, sophomore Sierra Norman scored 13 points to lead the Bull Dogs to a 58-38 victory. McKinley added 12 points and sophomore Brooke Bruin chipped in 10 points for CN (15-1). Freshman Hanna Bramlett had eight points. Anye Friend tallied 11 points and Casey Thomas scored eight points for the Panthers.

                There was no freshman game against Bloomington South.

                Columbus North’s freshman team hosts Mooresville at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Jan. 15) in the makeup of a postponed game from Friday (Jan. 12).

                All three teams – varsity, JV and freshmen – travel to Zionsville on Wednesday (Jan. 17). JV and freshman games are at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows at 7:30 p.m.

                The Bull Dogs, who have won or shared the CI title now for seven consecutive seasons, can claim an outright league crown when they visit Bloomington South on Friday (Jan. 19). The JV game will be at 6 p.m., and the varsity will follow at 7:30 p.m. There will be no freshman game that night.
