Columbus North gymnastics wins sixth consecutive Conference Indiana championship

            INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Claire Thompson won two events and the all-around crown on Tuesday (Feb. 13), leading the Columbus North gymnastics team to the championship of the Conference Indiana meet.

            The Bull Dogs totaled 110.400 points to take the top prize in the four-school event held at the National Athletic Sports Arena in Franklin Township. Bloomington North was runner-up at 98.775 followed by Franklin Central at 95.400 and Bloomington South at 94.475.

            Thompson claimed the all-around blue ribbon with a score of 37.575. That effort included a first on vault at 9.500, a first on bars at 9.725, a second on beam at 9.100 and a third on floor at 9.250.

            CN sophomore Sami Heathcote won two events and was second in the all-around with a 37.425. Her performance included a first on floor at 9.450, a first on beam at 9.225, a second on vault with a season-best 9.375 and a second on bars at 9.375.

            Bull Dogs junior Tova Edwards placed third in the all-around with a season-best 34.625. She was second on floor with a season-best 9.300, third on vault with a season-best 9.100, fourth on bars with a season-best 8.350 and posted a 7.875 on beam.

            Other CN athletes included sophomore Alayne Davis, third on bars (8.575), fourth on vault (8.850) and fifth on floor (9.150); sophomore Ashley Niebrugge, fifth on beam (8.425) and sixth on floor (9.100); senior Kaitlyn Calandro, sixth on beam (8.300); junior Emma Cooper, who scored an 8.475 on vault; and sophomore Grace Ellis, who posted a 7.925 on bars.

            Columbus North captured the team title for the sixth consecutive season and the 14th time in 21 years of CI competition. The meet completes CN’s regular season.

            The Bull Dogs return to action at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23 in the Columbus East Sectional.
