Porter, Washington lead Terre Haute South past Columbus North 60-45 in boys basketball

                TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Senior Craig Porter scored 18 points with eight rebounds and four assists Saturday evening (Dec. 16), helping the Terre Haute South boys basketball team post a 60-45 victory over visiting Columbus North in a Conference Indiana encounter.

                Senior De’Avion Washington added 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Braves, who improved to 4-2 overall while capturing their league opener. Junior Kenyon Sholty chipped in nine points, and junior Elliott Cotton had six points for the home team.

                Freshman Blake Barker tallied 12 points with three rebounds to pace the Bull Dogs (4-3, 1-1). Senior Jaylen Flemmons and junior Lakeevan Whedon each contributed 10 points for CN.

                Terre Haute South took a 19-9 lead in the first quarter, but Columbus North closed the deficit to 26-22 at intermission. The Braves led 48-38 at the third stop, then outscored the Bull Dogs 12-7 over the final eight minutes to seal the outcome.

                Columbus North won both sub-varsity contests.

                In the JV game, freshman Reese Harmon totaled 15 points and four steals to lead the Bull Dogs (7-0) to a 61-40 triumph. Junior Cameron Wischmeyer added 12 points and sophomore Nicholas Schiavello had 11 points for CN. Freshman Jacob Rutledge and sophomore Owen Findley each scored 10 points to pace the Braves.

                At the freshman level, Preston Terrell scored 13 points and Leyton McGovern netted eight points as Columbus North claimed a 31-28 decision in overtime. McGovern made a basket and Trevor Wright hit 2-of-4 free throws in the extra period to provide separation for the Bull Dogs (7-1). Dylan Major scored nine points and Noah Crosley had seven points for Terre Haute South.

                The Columbus North varsity returns to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27 against Pike in the Noblesville Invitational. CN will play three games in the two-day event, with times and opponents determined by results of the earlier rounds. The Bull Dogs will play either Warren Central or Chesterton in the second round. The Bull Dogs will face either Broad Ripple, Crown Point, Indianapolis Lighthouse-East or Noblesville in the final round.
