Columbus North Hires Brett White As New Girls Basketball Coach

Columbus North Hires Brett White As New Girls Basketball Coach

Columbus, IN (April 7, 2021) – Columbus North High School announces the hire of Brett White as the new girl's varsity basketball head coach.

“We are excited to have Coach White become the next girl's basketball head coach at Columbus North. Brett has a passion for the game and he will build character with our girls. He has high expectations for our program and he leads by example,” Columbus North Athletic Director Brian Lewis said.

White, a math teacher at Columbus North, grew up in Newman, Illinois, and was a manager and student assistant at Eastern Illinois University. After teaching and serving as freshman boys coach for two years in Monticello, Illinois, White moved to Columbus in 1999.

He first started his coaching career in Columbus as an assistant coach for the North boys varsity basketball team and head of the junior varsity program. After a year off, he was the eighth-grade boy's coach at Northside for five years, then was assistant freshman boys coach at North for a year before joining Pat McKee during the 2012-13 season. For the past twelve years, White has also served as an assistant girls golf coach at Columbus North.

Columbus North Principal David Clark added his approval to the hire.“Brett rose to the top during the interview process quickly. His experience as an assistant coach as well as his commitment to his students in the classroom are exemplary,” Clark added. “He’s a great teacher and I believe you can’t be a great coach without first being a great teacher. I believe Brett is both and it will translate well from the classroom to the basketball court.”

Coach White is looking forward to taking this new challenge on and will work to carry on the success Columbus North has had over the years.

“Our goal each year is going to be to compete for conference and sectional championships and individually, to see improvement,” White said. “You can expect our team to be prepared, compete in every game, communicate well, and play together.”

When the girl's basketball team returns to Memorial Gymnasium in the future, fans will see a coaching staff full of passion and a commitment to excellence. “Fans and parents can expect to see our girls become more aggressive on the floor and play with a lot of passion,” Lewis said. “He will push them to be great and love them like his own family.”

“One of the best things about being a high school coach is the growth you see from freshman year to when our girls finish the program as a senior. I want my players to feel positive about what they have accomplished here at North and be able to look back at their time as a positive experience,” Coach White said.

Coach Brett White is married to Allison White, a Southside Elementary teacher and former Indiana High School Basketball All-Star at Columbus East High School and they have two daughters.

White’s oldest daughter Madison was a senior on this year’s North team and plans to play college basketball at St. Mary of the Woods. His younger daughter Kaitlin was a freshman on this year’s JV team.
