Five Columbus North football players take part in college-bound student-athlete ceremony on Thursday

Five Columbus North High School seniors took part in a college-bound student-athlete ceremony on Thursday (Feb. 7) to finalize their commitments for college athletics and academics.

The athletes participating in the ceremony in the lobby of the Bill Stearman Athletic Complex were football players Cortez Bandy, Andrew Chapman, Noah Earl, Jaylen Flemmons and Damon Hunter Jr.

This was the second signing ceremony for the 2017-18 school year for athletes in the Class of 2018.

Flemmons is headed to Ball State as a preferred walk-on with the chance of a scholarship in the future. Bandy and Earl are bound for Marian University in Indianapolis. Hunter will enroll at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne. Chapman will attend Trine University in Angola, Ind.

The 6-3, 200-pound Flemmons caught 55 passes for 995 yards and 13 TDs last fall for the 9-2 Bull Dogs, the yardage figure setting a school season record and the reception total being the second best for a season. The 55 catches also pushed his career total to 93 receptions, a career school record. Flemmons joins a Cardinals’ program that went 2-10 in 2017, including 0-8 in the Mid-American Conference.

Bandy, a 5-11, 200-pound running back, rushed for a team-best 903 yards and 16 touchdowns on 188 carries. He also caught 10 passes for 93 yards and one TD out of the backfield. In addition, he made five tackles with one pass broken up in spot duty as a defensive back.

The 5-11, 195-pound Earl posted 36 solo tackles, 34 assisted tackles plus three tackles for loss, two PBUs and one fumble recovery as a linebacker.

Bandy and Earl both will join a Marian program that went 7-3 last fall against NAIA opponents and 4-2 in the Mid-States Football Association.

Hunter, a 5-11, 165-pound safety, netted 59 solos, 26 assists, seven TFLs, two interceptions and four PBUs. He joins a Saint Francis program that went 14-0 last fall and captured its second consecutive NAIA national championship.

The 5-10, 205-pound Chapman totaled 14 solos, 16 assists, two TFLs and two PBUs. He is headed to a Trine program that went 11-1 in 2017, posted a 10-0 mark in the regular season, captured the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship at 6-0 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Three Columbus North seniors took part in a college-bound ceremony in December. At least three other Bull Dog seniors are set for another ceremony that is scheduled for April.
