COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Jake Petrusky singled, moved to second on a ground out and scored when sophomore Adam Chapman reached on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday evening (April 13), giving the Columbus North baseball team a walk-off victory over Floyd Central at Southside Elementary School.
Maddox struck out 12, walked three and allowed five hits and two runs to pick up his first victory in a complete game for the Bull Dogs (7-2). Floyd Central senior Alex Lozado fanned eight CN batters but took the loss after yielding three runs on six hits.
Maddox helped himself to a 2-0 lead in the third inning when he singled home Chapman and freshman Blake Huffman. Chapman reached on an infield single, then moved to third when freshman Austin Bode doubled. Huffman entered as a courtesy runner for Bode, the Bull Dogs’ catcher.
Maddox blanked the Highlanders (2-5) for six innings, but the visitors tied the game in the top of the seventh. Senior Jarrett Agnew began the rally with an infield single. He moved to second on a wild pitch, then scored when junior Josh Gross reached on an error. Junior Aaron Brown then doubled to left field, driving Gross in, before Maddox ended the inning with a strikeout.
That set the stage for the bottom of the seventh, where Petrusky singled and moved to second on a groundout by sophomore Grant Trinkle. Senior Tyler Finke was intentionally walked before Chapman’s hard-hit ground ball was misplayed and allowed Petrusky to reach the plate with the winning run.
Bode had the third-inning double to lead the six-hit attack. Finke, Chapman, Maddox, Petrusky and junior Jakob Meyer each had singles for the Bull Dogs.
Columbus North is scheduled to play two road games on Saturday (April 14) – a Conference Indiana contest at 11 a.m. at Terre Haute North and a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m. at Northview.
