COLUMBUS, Ind. – Sophomores Grant Trinkle and Homare Takauchi each provided two hits and senior Jake Petrusky pitched a complete game Saturday (May 12), keying the Columbus North baseball team to a 9-2 victory over Terre Haute South for a split of a doubleheader on Senior Day at Southside Elementary School.
The visiting Braves claimed an 11-5 decision in the first game, which also stood as the teams’ Conference Indiana encounter.
The Bull Dogs – now 15-8 overall and completing league play at 3-4 – used four singles and a double to take the lead for good in the third inning of the second game. Entering the frame tied 1-1, freshman Blake Huffman, senior Tyler Finke, Takauchi and freshman Austin Bode each singled to bring two runs in. Trinkle followed with a double for another run and a 4-1 advantage.
Terre Haute South cut its deficit to 4-2 in the top of the fifth, but Columbus North answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Takauchi started things with a walk, Bode was hit by a pitch and Takauchi moved to third on a fly out. Takauchi and Bode then succeeded on a double-steal for one run, and Petrusky walked to put runners on first and second. Sophomore Casper Clark then singled in a run, sophomore Adam Chapman doubled in a run and Clark scored on a passed ball with Huffman at the plate.
The Bull Dogs added one more run in the sixth inning, and Petrusky – who struck out three, walked three and scattered 10 hits – allowed two runners but closed out the game in the seventh inning.
Junior Brayton Reed had three hits while junior Dillon Kinnett and junior Cole Whitlock each had two hits for Terre Haute South (14-6, 5-1).
In the opener, senior Benji Downs went 4-for-4 with a double and five RBIs to lead the visiting Braves to an 11-5 triumph in the conference game. Kinnett went 3-for-5 with a double and Reed went 2-for-4 with an RBI to help the effort.
Senior Conner Brown also doubled and senior Chase Hoesman drove in two runs for the visitors, who pounded out 14 hits and scored five runs in the third, three in the sixth and three in the seventh. Downs struck out six over five innings to pick up the win for Terre Haute South, which would clinch an outright CI championship with a victory next Friday (May 18) against Franklin Central.
Chapman had two hits and one RBI to lead the Bull Dogs’ offense in Game 1. Finke, Trinkle, Bode and freshman Kyler McIntosh also had singles for CN.
Finke, Petrusky and classmates Bryce Lollar and Nicholas Stevens were recognized in a ceremony before Game 1.
Southport defeated Terre Haute North 3-1 on Saturday, moving the Cardinals ahead of Columbus North at 4-3 and causing the Patriots to finish league play at 5-2. If Franklin Central (3-2) beats Bloomington South on Tuesday (May 15), then the THS-FC game either would allow the Braves to win the league by themselves or allow the Flashes to force a three-way tie for the crown. One other league game to be played is Perry Meridian (0-6) at Bloomington North (3-3) on Tuesday.
At the JV level at Whiteland, the host Warriors walloped the Bull Dogs 20-1 in five innings. Sophomore Oliver Fischer had an RBI double for CN (10-8). Sophomore Pedro Munoz also had a double, and freshman Kyle Carlson had a single.
Columbus North returns to action at 6 p.m. Monday (May 14) against Fishers. The varsity hosts the Tigers at Southside Elementary School. The JV travels to Fishers.
