Bruin's bases-clearing double lifts Bull Dogs past Jennings County 8-5 in softball

NORTH VERNON, Ind. – Sophomore Brooke Bruin ripped a bases-loaded double in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday (May 15), lifting the Columbus North softball team to an 8-5 victory at Jennings County.

Junior Brooke Rice opened the decisive burst by reaching on an error. Freshman Aden Voss and sophomore Brittany Reichenba each drew a walk before Bruin provided a shot that cleared the bases and improved the Bull Dogs to 4-15.

The host Panthers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but CN freshman Meghan Waggoner escaped the jam with a strikeout, a pop out and a ground out to end the game.

Sophomore Lilly Hurt went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Columbus North attack. Bruin and junior Bailey Lofton each provided two hits, while Reichenba and sophomore Sierra Norman each had one hit.

Columbus North scored one run in the first when Lofton singled, and Hurt brought home courtesy runner Angenzi Gonzalez. CN made it 4-0 in the fourth. Rice and Reichenba each reached on an error, Bruin singled in one run and Norman doubled in two runs.

The hosts drew even in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bull Dogs regained the lead in the fifth. Hurt singled, advanced when Waggoner reached on an error and scored when Voss reached on an error.

Jennings County (11-11) tied the game again in the sixth, setting the stage for Bruin’s heroics.

Waggoner struck out eight and allowed six hits to record the victory.

Columbus North returns to action at 5 p.m. Thursday (May 17) when it hosts Hauser at Southside Elementary School in its regular-season finale. The Bull Dogs follow by facing Bloomington North at 6 p.m. Monday (May 21) in the first round of the East Central Sectional.
