Coach Scott Seavers is hopeful the Columbus North girls golf team continues a legacy of success in 2018.
With five returning players and five freshmen, Seavers is looking to senior Alexandria Munnicha, junior Annie Anderson and sophomore Nathaly Munnicha to serve as leaders for this season’s squad.
That trio is rejoined by sophomores Yestika Nischol and Paige Sherlock plus a quintet of rookies – Gwen Anderson, Erica Bishop, Macy Euler, Tiffany Fu and Ella Wilks.
“We have a young team that will count on Alex, Nathaly and Annie in every match,” said Seavers, whose squad placed fourth in the 2017 IHSAA State Finals and third in the 2016 state meet. “We look for them to be leaders, get better through the season and help the team win.”
Nathaly Munnicha averaged 79.27 strokes in 11 18-hole matches last fall, while Alex Munnicha was just behind at 79.60. Annie Anderson averaged 85.62 in eight matches, while Nischol carded a 92 in her only 18-hole round in 2017.
“Nathaly has played a lot of golf for many years,” the coach said. “She is a very good player, and we are counting on her to be our ace in all aspects. Alex also has a lot of experience, and she rarely makes mistakes. Her short game is strong, and we look to her to be a leader.
“Annie is a great competitor, and we expect her to get better and better. Yestika had a good freshman year, and we look for her to step up and be consistent.”
Seavers sees potential in the Bull Dogs’ freshmen.
“I like our freshman group,” he said. “They work at it, and they want to get better. While I am sure their scores will be up and down, four of them could vie to be in our top five. We’re going to try to give them as many opportunities to play as possible. Hopefully, they will provide some good scores.”
The team opens its season at 9 a.m. Monday (July 30) in the Bloomington South Invitational at Bloomington Country Club. It follows in the Zionsville Invitational at 9 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 1) at The Golf Club of Indiana in Lebanon, then plays in the Fall Preview meet at 1 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 4) at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.
Other multi-team events are the Fuzzy Zoeller Inviational on Aug. 11 at Champions Pointe Golf Club in Henryville, the Roncalli Invitational on Aug. 18 at Smock Golf Course in Indianapolis, the Franklin Central Invitational on Sept. 8 also at Smock and the Conference Indiana meet on Sept. 10 at Timbergate Golf Course in Edinburgh.
Columbus North will compete in the Greensburg Sectional on Sept. 15 at Greensburg Country Club. If in the top three teams, the Bull Dogs will advance to the Lapel Regional on Sept. 22 at Edgewood Golf Course in Anderson. The top three teams in the regional qualify for the Sept. 28-29 state meet at Prairie View.
Despite the team’s youth, Seavers has high expectations.
“This is one of the youngest teams we’ve had, but we still want to win conference, sectional and get to state,” Seavers said. “We’re looking forward to the season and seeing what this team can accomplish.”
