Nathaly Munnicha goes 3-under par to win Zionsville Invitational; Bull Dogs fourth as a team

LEBANON, Ind. – Sophomore Nathaly Munnicha fired a 3-under-par 69 on Wednesday (Aug. 1), claiming medalist honors and helping the Columbus North girls golf team to a fourth-place finish in the Zionsville Invitational.

Munnicha recorded seven birdies, one bogey and one triple-bogey at The Golf Club of Indiana en route to a sizzling 3-under score in an 18-hole round. The raw performance was one stroke off a school-record 68 by Taylor Gohn on the Center Grove Invitational in 2008. It also was one stroke shy of Gohn’s school-record 4-under-par the same day. Gohn also had a 69 in the 2009 Center Grove Invitational.

Carmel posted a 309 to capture team honors in the 12-team competition. Host Zionsville was runner-up with a 311 followed by Guerin Catholic at 327 and Columbus North at 329.

Senior Alex Munnicha contributed an 86, while junior Annie Anderson and freshman Ella Wilks each carded an 87 for the Bull Dogs. Sophomore Yestika Nischol rounded out the top five with a 93. Playing as individuals, freshman Gwen Anderson tallied a 104 and freshman Macy Euler had a 106.

“I drove well and my irons carried deep,” Nathaly Munnicha said of her round, noting that she hit 16 greens in regulation. “My putts also were dropping, which was great.”

She finished three strokes ahead of Westfield’s Jocelyn Bruch and four better than Carmel’s Katie Kuc.

Munnicha’s previous best rounds were a pair of 70s, one in a practice round at Harrison Lake Country Club and the other in a junior event this past spring.

Munnicha opened her round with a three-putt bogey, but she recovered with a birdie on the par-5 second hole to put some spring in her step. She added six more birdies to move to 6-under going to the 18th hole, where she tripled the day’s finale.

“I don’t know what happened on the last hole,” she said. “I maybe was thinking too much about the score, which is something you should not do. I will learn from it.”

Munnicha said her best shot of the day was early in the round, when she hit a low liner to get out of trouble on a par-5 hole. The shot stopped on the fringe of the green, about 15 feet from the hole, and she followed by sinking the putt for a birdie.

“I played great today, and hopefully I keep it up,” she said. “The team also played well, although we have room for improvement. I’m happy with how we did, and I’m really excited for the season.”

Columbus North returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 4) when it takes part in the Fall Preview meet at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel. The team’s first dual meet at at 4:30 p.m. Monday (Aug. 6) against Perry Meridian at Harrison Lake Country Club.
