COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Jalen Paswater blocked a punt, picked up the loose ball and returned it 5 yards for a touchdown Friday evening (Oct. 5), sparking the Columbus North football team to a 35-3 victory over Bloomington North at Max Andress Field.
Sophomore Blake Huffman scored a pair of touchdowns and senior Trenton Kelley threw for a pair of TDs as the Bull Dogs improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in Conference Indiana. Columbus North can clinch an outright CI championship with a victory at Terre Haute South next Friday (Oct. 12).
Huffman totaled 111 and one rushing touchdown on 22 carries, while Kelley completed 12 of 23 passes for 168 yards and the two TDs. One of the scoring passes covered 20 yards to Huffman, and the other was a 26-yarder to sophomore Preston Terrell.
Huffman finished with four receptions for 48 yards, while senior Langston Lunsford had three catches for 71 yards. Senior D’Andre Scruggs totaled three receptions for 19 yards, and Terrell had two catches for 30 yards.
For the game, Columbus North outgained the Cougars 327-111 and the CN defense came up with two fumble recoveries – one by sophomore Royce Lofton on punt coverage and one by senior Will Redding when the visitors were threatening to score.
Bloomington North (2-6, 0-4) took a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter when senior Ben Freel converted a 30-yard field to cap an 11-play, 52-yard drive that include 25 yards in CN penalties.
The Bull Dogs didn’t move on their next two possessions, but the defense followed the second by forcing a Bloomington North punt from its own 19. Paswater charged through the line, blocked the punt, then scooped up the ball and ran it into the end zone to give Columbus North great energy at the 9:23 mark of the second quarter.
Then 2:01 left in the half, Kelley hit Huffman for a 20-yard touchdown to end a seven-play, 60-yard drive. Then after using two timeouts defensively and forcing a punt, Kelley connected with Terrell on a 26-yard scored with 34 seconds to go before intermission.
Lofton’s recovery on punt coverage gave the Bull Dogs the ball on the Bloomington North 48 with 8:36 showing in the third quarter. Four plays later, after a 38-yard Kelley-to-Lunsford connection, Huffman ran around left end for a 5-yard touchdown.
On CN’s next possession, after Redding’s fumble recovery at the Bull Dogs’ 13, Jolley bulled in for a 2-yard TD to cap a 13-play, 87-yard yard march.
Columbus North visits Terre Haute South (3-5, 2-2) at 7 p.m. next Friday in its final CI contest of the season. Bloomington North hosts Southport (6-2, 3-1) at 7 p.m. next Friday.
