The Columbus North football team now knows its postseason path.
Two days after beating Bloomington North 35-3 and clinching at least a share of the Conference Indiana championship, the Bull Dogs (7-1) learned Sunday (Oct. 6) that they will visit Center Grove (5-3) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 in the opening round of Class 6A Sectional 8.
The other first-round game in Sectional 8 is Franklin Central (2-6) at Jeffersonville (1-7).
The CN-CG winner will face the FC-Jeffersonville winner in the sectional final on Friday, Nov. 2. The Bull Dogs will be the home team for the sectional final should they earn a spot in that round.
Sectional admission is $6 per person.
In last season’s sectional, Columbus North defeated Jeffersonville 56-14 and Center Grove topped Franklin Central 35-3 in the first round. Center Grove then beat the Bull Dogs 20-14 in the sectional final.
In Center Grove, the Bull Dogs are facing an opponent from the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference. The Trojans have won 13 sectionals over the years, including the last seven seasons. Center Grove also has won 12 regionals, four semi-states and two state championships – Class 5A in 2008 and Class 6A in 2015.
Columbus North has won four sectionals and three regionals, the most recent of both in 2007. The Bull Dogs have no semi-state or state titles.
Last Friday, sophomore Carson Steele rand for 251 yards and three touchdowns to lead Center Grove to a 38-17 victory at Lawrence North. Senior Charlie Ogega contributed 70 yards rushing and senior Gavin Matheson added 56 yards and one TD rushing. Senior Jack Moore completed 5 of 8 passes for 95 yards.
For the season, Steele has 1,380 yards and 18 TDs rushing. Ogega has 416 yards and two TDs, and Matheson has 293 yards and two TDs. Moore has completed 49 of 85 passes for 474 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions. Senior Jake Keith is the leading receiver with 13 catches for 147 yards, while top defenders are junior Gabe Boyd (47 tackles), senior Lucas Roehling (42 tackles), senior Matt Pence (41 tackles) and senior Drew Green (39 tackles).
Coach Eric Moore, father of the quarterback, is 184-65 in 20 seasons at Center Grove. Overall, he has a 232-70 record in 24 seasons.
Senior Trenton Kelley paces the Columbus North offense with 1,487 yards and 13 touchdowns passing on 117-of-193 accuracy. Sophomore Blake Huffman has rushed for 957 yards and nine touchdowns, while senior Michael Johnson has 249 yards and two TDs. Sophomore Preston Terrell leads the receivers with 38 catches for 397 yards and three TDs. Senior Langston Lunsford has 14 receptions for 263 yards and three TDs, and Huffman has 23 catches for 255 yards and two TDs.
Senior Tay Wells leads the defense with 59 tackles. Junior Montez Mitchell has added 56 tackles, while junior Jackson Payne has 54 tackles and junior Landon Robbins has 51 tackles.
Coach Tim Bless is 129-82 in 19 seasons with the Bull Dogs. He is 141-91 in 21 seasons overall.
As a team, Columbus North is sixth in Class 6A in scoring at 33.75, ninth in scoring defense at 16.38 and third in scoring margin at 17.38. Center Grove is averaging 25.8 points, allowing 21.3 points and has a plus 4.5 margin.
Columbus North is 18th in the latest Sagarin Ratings with 83.90 points. Center Grove is fourth in the same ratings with 97.91 points. Franklin Central is 68th with 67.37 points, and Jeffersonville is 170th with 45.18 points.
Columbus North has won football sectionals in 1989, 2004, 2006 and 2007, all in Class 5A. It also claimed regional titles in the last three of those seasons.
