Center Grove tops Columbus North 42-0 in football sectional

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Sophomore Carson Steele ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns Friday evening (Oct. 26), sparking the Center Grove football team to a 42-0 victory over Columbus North in Class 6A Sectional 8.

Steele’s scoring runs covered 4 yards, 41 yards and 1 yard as the host Trojans improved to 7-3 for the season and earned a date in the sectional final next Friday (Nov. 2) against Franklin Central (3-7), a 42-3 winner over Jeffersonville.

Seniors Brian Gaffney and Gavin Matheson added TD carries for Center Grove, while senior Sam Hohlt caught a 17-yard scoring pass from senior Jackson Moore.

The Trojans outgained the Bull Dogs 399-144 for the game. The home team’s defense recorded six sacks for 22 yards and a pair of errant CN snaps cost the visitors another 34 yards.

Senior Trenton Kelley completed 15-of-18 passes for 106 yards and one interception for Columbus North. Sophomore Blake Huffman ran 13 times for 79 yards. Senior D’Andre Scruggs had three receptions for 36 yards, and senior Langston Lunsford had three catches for 31 yards.

Steele opened the scoring on the game’s first possession, capping a 66-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown.

Center Grove senior Lucas Roehling intercepted Kelley on CN’s first play from scrimmage at the Bull Dogs’ 40. Eight plays later, Gaffney ran around the left side for a 7-yard touchdown.

Steele burst through the line for his 41-yard touchdown with 4:28 to go in the second quarter, and senior Lucas Hunter blocked a CN punt on the next possession. That gave Center Grove a short field, and Steele finished a 40-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown with 49 seconds left in the half.

Moore connected with Hohlt on a play-action pass for a touchdown on the Trojans’ first possession of the second half, and the hosts completed the scoring with a 13-yard run by Matheson early in the final period.

Columbus North completed its season with an 8-2 record.
