Huffman, Trinkle, McDaniel help Columbus North beat Libertyville 9-4 in baseball

                WESTFIELD, Ind. – Sophomore Blake Huffman homered and drove in five runs Friday (April 12), leading the Columbus North baseball team to a 9-4 victory over Libertyville, Ill., in the first round of the Prep Baseball Report Midwest Select Invitational at Grand Park.

                Junior Grant Trinkle went 3-for-4 and sophomore Hayden McDaniel added a two-RBI double in a five-run sixth inning for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 7-2 for the season. Junior Adam Chapman picked up the decision on the mound, allowing no hits over two innings while pitching in relief of senior Jakob Meyer.

                Chapman, junior Homare Takauchi, sophomore Austin Bode, junior Casper Clark and sophomore Reese Harmon each had one hit for CN.

                Derek Calamari produced two doubles while Dylon Drumke and Tanner Kelly each had two hits for the Wildcats (5-8).

                The Bull Dogs went ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tied 4-4 entering the inning, McIntosh walked, Trinkle singles and Bode walked to load the bases. Clark walked to force one run in, Huffman knocked in two runs and McDaniel capped the rally with his two-run double.

                Libertyville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Calamari doubled in David Robertson, who had walked. Columbus North tied the game in the fourth when McDaniel reached on an error, advanced on a ground out and scored when McIntosh reached on an error.

                The Wildcats went up 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Roberts reached on an error, Drumke doubled him home, Calamari doubled with Drumke stopping at third, and Sam Paden doubled in two runs.

                Columbus North drew even in the bottom of the frame when Takauchi singled, Clark walked and Huffman homered to left field.

                The Bull Dogs return to action with two games in the event on Saturday (April 13) – 10:30 a.m. against Portage Northern, Mich., and 2 p.m. against Edwardsville, Ill.

                The Columbus North JV has a home doubleheader against Cathedral at 11 a.m. Saturday at Southside Elementary School. The Bull Dogs’ C Team has a home doubleheader against Bloomington South at 10 a.m. Saturday also at the Southside complex.
