Columbus North softball finishes as runner-up in Brown County Invitational

NASHVILLE, Ind. – Junior Emma Summers allowed just three hits, struck out 13 and hit a home run on Saturday (April 13) to lead the Brown County softball team to a 4-2 victory over Columbus North in the championship game of the Brown County Invitational.

Summers and junior Taylor Poling each had two hits for the Eagles, who improved to 11-0 for the season. Junior Aubrey Hollander and junior Adriana Kritzer also had hits for the home team.

Junior Sierra Norman blasted a two-run home run in the third inning for the Bull Dogs (2-5), giving the visitors a 2-0 lead at the time. But Brown County rallied to tie the game in the fourth inning and scored two more runs in the sixth inning to remain undefeated.

Sophomore Meghan Waggoner also had two hits for CN, while freshman Peri Foust allowed six hits and struck out eight while pitching a complete game.

In the first round, senior Bailey Lofton went 4-for-5 to help Columbus North to an 8-6 victory over Brownstown Central. Freshman Emalee Heafner also went 3-for-4, while Waggoner, Norman, freshman Rachel Cowan, freshman Lillian Mackey and senior Jenna Fath each added one hit in CN’s 12-hit attack.

Cowan pitched four-plus innings, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out six. Foust relieved in the middle of the fifth to end a Braves’ threat, allowing just two hits and striking out three in three official innings.

The Bull Dogs took a 6-0 lead after three innings, but Brownstown (2-6) used one run in the fourth and five more in the fifth to tie the game. But Columbus North rebounded with two runs in the sixth inning, Norman stroking a double and Foust and freshman Emily Hatton scoring the go-ahead runs.

Foust did not allow a run the rest of the way to earn the pitching decision.

Brown County defeated Hauser 10-0 in its first-round game.

Hauser faced Brownstown Central in the third-place game.

Columbus North returns to action at 5 p.m. Monday (April 15) when both the varsity and JV teams visit rival Columbus East.
