Bull Dogs beat Southport 17-6, claim Conference Indiana championship in softball

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Bailey Lofton went 3-for-3, hit a grand slam plus another home run and drove in seven runs on Monday (May 13), leading the Columbus North softball team to a 17-6 victory over Southport and the Conference Indiana championship.

The Bull Dogs improved to 11-8 overall and completed conference play at 5-0 for the program’s first outright CI title. Columbus North shared the league crown in 2009 for its only other trophy. The Bull Dogs placed second in the conference in 2014 and 2016.

Southport dropped to 11-13 overall and 2-2 in league games.

Junior Sierra Norman hit a first-inning home run, but the Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

CN went ahead for good in the third inning when freshman Rachel Cowan doubled home freshman Alexia Heafner and Norman to highlight a four-run frame.

The Bull Dogs added two more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to lead 10-6. Then in the seventh, Lofton’s grand slam keyed a seven-run inning that came on five hits and two Southport errors.

Alexia Heafner went 3-for-3, Norman went 4-for-6, sophomore Meghan Waggoner went 3-for-4, freshman Peri Foust went 3-for-5 and Cowan went 2-for-2 for the Bull Dogs. Freshman Emalee Heafner, junior Brooke Bruin and senior Jenna Fath each added one hit.

Cowan pitched a complete game, striking out three.

The game was to be played at Holder Field in Indianapolis, but it was moved to Southside Elementary School when conditions at Holder Field made that diamond unplayable.

                There was no JV game.

Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 14) when it hosts Jennings County at the varsity and JV levels at Southside Elementary School. Lofton and classmates Jenna Fath and Brooke Rice will be recognized in a Senior Day program.
