CARMEL, Ind. – Senior Henry Kiel shot a 5-over-par 77 on Tuesday (June 11), leading the Columbus North boys golf team to eighth place after the first round of the IHSAA State Finals at Prairie View Golf Club.
Senior Drew Smith added a 79 and sophomore Jacob Niedbalski carded an 82 as the Bull Dogs posted a 321 aggregate. Freshman Luke Schneider completed CN’s top four with an 83, and senior Jackson Kerber rounded out the lineup with an 85.
Carmel, led by a 2-under 70 by senior Nick Dentino, led the team standings with a 299. Juniors Luke Prall and Clay Stirsman each shot a 74 for the Greyhounds. Senior Cole Harris provided an 81 and senior Jack Crawford had an 82 for Carmel.
Center Grove stood second with a 303 followed by Noblesville with a 305 in the 15-school field. Floyd Central was fourth at 311 followed by Guerin Catholic at 313, Castle at 314, Fort Wayne Dwenger at 315 and Columbus North.
Penn was ninth with a 322 followed by Hamilton Southeastern at 324, Yorktown with a 327, Warsaw with a 328, Evansville North with a 330, Crown Point with a 337 and Plainfield with a 338.
Dentino and Peru sophomore Kash Bellar shared the individual lead with 70s, two strokes better than Castle junior Adam Bratton, Noblesville senior Clay Merchant and Brebeuf Jesuit sophomore Drew Wrightson.
Center Grove junior Alex Heck, Heritage Christian junior Drew Pickering, and Bedford North Lawrence senior Ethan Stanley each had a 73, while there was an six-way tie for ninth place at 74.
The second and final round of the State Finals is set for 8 a.m. Wednesday (June 12) back at Prairie View. The Bull Dogs’ five spot, either Kerber or sophomore Luke VanDeventer, will tee off at 8:27 a.m. Schneider follows at 8:36 a.m., Niedbalski at 8:45 a.m., Smith at 8:54 a.m. and Kiel at 9:03 a.m.
