Coach Scott Seavers is hopeful the Columbus North girls golf team fields a strong group again in 2019.
With seven returning players and two freshmen, Seavers is looking to junior Nathaly Munnicha and senior Annie Anderson to serve as leaders for this season’s squad.
That duo is rejoined by junior Yestika Nischol as well as sophomores Ella Wilks, Macy Euler, Gwen Anderson and Erica Bishop. Freshmen vying for spots in the lineup are Ritisha Rashmil and Natalie Cross.
“I expect we will have six players competing for the top five spots,” Seavers said, alluding to Munnicha, Annie Anderson, Wilks, Nischol, Euler and Gwen Anderson. “Our primary goal to is make continuous improvement throughout the season.”
Munnicha earned all-state honors while averaging 75.67 strokes in nine 18-hole rounds and leading the Bull Dogs to a seventh-place finish at the 2018 IHSAA State Finals. Annie Anderson averaged 84.11 in 18-hole rounds, while Wilks and Nischol each carded an 89.44 average. Euler averaged 98.00 and Gwen Anderson averaged 99.50 in two 18-hole rounds each.
“Nathaly is consistent in her game and one of the top players in the state,” Seavers said. “Annie is a mature leader, while Ella is a good ball striker with varsity experience. Yestika also has varsity experience and continues to improve, while Macy has made big improvements and shows a lot of promise. Gwen is a smart player who continues to improve, and Erica works hard and has improved a lot since last year.”
The team opens its season at 9 a.m. Monday (Aug. 5) in the Bloomington South Invitational at Bloomington Country Club. It follows in the Fall Preview meet at 1 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 10) at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel and has one of just four home dual meets at Harrison Lake Country Club on Aug. 12 against Perry Meridian.
Other multi-team events are Aug. 17 in the Zionsville Invitational at the Golf Club of Indiana in Lebanon, Aug. 24 in the Roncalli Invitational at Smock Golf Course in Indianapolis, Sept. 7 in the Hall of Fame Invitational at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville and Sept. 16 in the Conference Indiana meet at Timbergate Golf Course in Edinburgh.
Remaining home dual meets are Aug. 19 against Greenwood, Sept. 5 against Southport and Sept. 17 against Columbus East.
Columbus North will compete in the Greensburg Sectional on Sept. 21 at Greensburg Country Club. If in the top three teams, the Bull Dogs will advance to the Lapel Regional on Sept. 28 at Edgewood Golf Course in Anderson. The top three teams in the regional qualify for the Oct. 4-5 state meet at Prairie View.
Seavers has high expectations for this squad. In addition to last season’s seventh-place finish at state, the team placed fifth in 2014, tied for seventh in 2015, placed third in 2016 and finished fourth in 2017.
“We want to win the conference tournament, sectional and regional,” he said. “And we want to play in the state tournament.”
