COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Cung “Josh” Hlei scored a pair of first-half goals Tuesday evening (Sept. 10) to lead the Perry Meridian boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Columbus North at Max Andress Field.
Sophomore Luke Schneider countered for the Bull Dogs in the second half, but the hosts were unable to pull off a complete comeback while falling to 3-5-0 for the season in the varsity-only encounter.
Hlei scored in the 24th minute when he stole a pass along the CN back line, maneuvered by a defender and the put the ball past Bull Dogs junior Colvin Iorio.
Hlei made it 2-0 in the 35th minute by finishing an impressive string of passes. The Falcons (5-1-0) had a restart from about 30 yards out on the right side. The free kick and series of precise passes gave Hlei the ball alone near the net, and he did not miss the opportunity.
Schneider scored for Columbus North in the 57th minute. He began the play with a corner kick that initially appeared thwarted. However, freshman Nathan Imlay chased down a loose ball and shot. Imlay’s shot was stopped, but Schneider scored on the rebound.
Iorio played the full 80 minutes in goal, making 14 saves.
Perry Meridian totaled 27 shots and 16 shots on goal. The Bull Dogs countered with 19 shots and seven shots on goal.
Columbus North returns to action on Friday (Sept. 13) when it visits Carmel. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity game follows at about 8 p.m.
