Columbus North places eighth in IHSAA girls golf State Finals; Munnicha ties for 13th individually

CARMEL, Ind. – Junior Nathaly Munnicha tied for 13th place individually with a two-round score of 154 on Saturday (Oct. 5), leading the Columbus North girls golf team to an eighth-place finish in the IHSAA State Finals.

Munnicha finished with a 74-80 over the 5,864-yard layout at Prairie View Golf Club as the Bull Dogs finished with a team total of 334-351–685, falling two spots on the second day after standing sixth after the opening round.

Junior Yestika Nischol added an 83-87–170 to tie for 37th place, while senior Annie Anderson carded an 84-94–178 to share 65th place. Sophomore Ella Wilks completed CN’s top four with a 93-90–183 for tie for 71st place, and sophomore Gwen Anderson rounded out the lineup with a 100-96–196 for 82nd place.

Homestead, led by sisters Madison and Morgan Dabagia, captured the team title with a 302-303–605. That score was 12 strokes better than runner-up Evansville North. The Huskies posted a 311-306–617 and were paced by sophomore Faith Johnson, the individual champion with a 2-under-par 142 over the two days.

Zionsville placed third in the 15-school field with a 324-311–635. The Eagles were followed by Westfield at 325-318 – 643, Carmel at 323-325 – 648, NorthWood at 342-338 – 680, Noblesville at 350-332 – 682 and Columbus North.

For Homestead’s winning squad, Madison Dabagia, a sophomore, was the individual runner-up with a 144 total. She was supported Morgan Dabagia, a senior, who tied for third with a 145; sophomore Morgan Senk, tied for ninth at 153; junior Megan Yoder, tied for 33rd at 169; and senior Olivia Render, tied for 47th at 172. The Spartans claimed the girls golf state championship for the first time.

Morgan Dabagia also was named winner of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award.

Johnson claimed the individual crown with a 73-69 over the two days, two strokes better than Madison Dabagia’s 73-71. Morgan Dabagia shot a 70-75 to share third place with Zionsville senior Annabelle Pancake, whose second-day 69 moved her into the top three. Carmel junior Katie Kuc placed fifth with a 71-76—147.

Munnicha’s 154 total was one stroke shy of finishing in a ninth-place tie. Nevertheless, Munnicha's performance at the state meet and all season long combined to have her be named to the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association's all-state team for the 2019 season.

Also, Annie Anderson was selected honorable mention Academic All-State.

Columbus North was making its 27th appearance in the IHSAA girls golf State Finals. The Bull Dogs now have finished in the top 10 on 21 occasions – second once, third five times, fourth twice, fifth twice, sixth twice, seventh four times, eighth twice and ninth three times. CN’s best finish as a team was second in 1973. The Bull Dogs placed fifth in 2014, tied for seventh in 2015, finished third in 2016, placed fourth in 2017 and finished seventh in 2018.
