TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Freshman Brianna Newell placed 13th individually on Saturday to lead the Columbus North girls cross country team to second place in the varsity division of the Nike Valley Twilight Meet at the LaVern Gibson Course.

Newell covered the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 46.4 seconds as the Bull Dogs totals 107 points, 54 behind Beavercreek, Ohio, for the team title.

In the boys’ varsity race, sophomore Matt Newell placed sixth individually in 15:42.4 as Columbus North finished sixth with 205 points. Elmhurst (Ill.) York was the boys’ team winner with 78 points.

For the CN girls, Brianna Newell was supported by freshman Lily Baker, junior Mackenzie Barnett, senior Olivia Morlok and freshman Jessica Meza. Baker placed 17th in 18:52.0, Barnett was 20th in 19:00.9, Morlok finished 23rd in 19:04.6 and Meza was 41st in 19:37.2. Rounding out the Bull Dogs’ lineup were junior Arek Tong, 51st in 19:48.6, and senior Kennedy Kerber, 81st in 20:25.0.

Matt Newell received help from sophomore Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff, sophomore Evan Carr, junior Collin Pruitt and junior Andy Stohr for the Columbus North boys. Kilbarger-Stumpff placed 23rd in 16:00.0, Carr was 58th in 16:31.9, Pruitt finished 61st in 16:34.4 and Stohr placed 66th in 16:37.8. Completing the CN top seven were junior Austin Pulkowski, 80th in 16:42.4, and sophomore Will Kiel, 104th in 16:59.2.

At the JV level, the Columbus North boys placed 15th with 449 points and the Columbus North girls finished 13th with 402 points. Senior Carson Littrell paced the boys’ JV with a time of 17:15.4. Junior Megan Saeger led the JV girls with a time of 22:09.8.

In the freshman-sophomore divisions, the CN boys placed third with 89 points and the CN girls took the title with 21 points. Freshman Jacob Strietelmeier paced the boys by placing 10th in 17:22.9. Freshman Ellen White led the girls by finishing third in 19:56.9.

Others contributing to the girls’ victory in the freshman-sophomore division were freshman Sydney Morlok, fourth in 20:10.9; sophomore Abby Jacobi, fifth in 20:12.8; freshman Julie Klaus, sixth in 20:19.2; and sophomore Katherine Rumsey, eighth in 20:35.5.

“We had a tremendous opportunity to race against some of the Midwest's best girls’ teams, and our girls took full advantage of that opportunity in all three races,” CN girls coach Rick Sluder said. “Our Freshman-Sophomore girls, led by Ellen White, started the night taking third, fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth overall to win the event as a team. They all took charge of the race and ran like veterans to win with a strong pack.

“Our varsity team competed the same way. They started off excellent and put themselves right up front from the beginning. We had our pack of four girls within just a few steps of each other at the mile. They ran a great team race. I can't praise our girls enough for their effort. Brianna Newell and Lily Baker ran incredible races as freshmen to lead us. Mackenzie Barnett and Olvia Morlok ran strong from beginning to end to hold our top four to an amazing 18-second gap. Finally, Jessica Meza ran her best race of the season to hold us one point in front of Yorkville for second place.

“This was a great tune-up for the state tournament (series). We now know exactly what we need to do to be successful over the next four weeks. We have set ourselves up for success if we keep working together and working hard.”

Columbus North returns to action at 10:30 a.m. next Saturday (Oct. 12) in the Brown County Sectional. Other schools competing there are Brown County, Brownstown Central, Columbus East, Edinburgh, Hauser, Martinsville, Seymour, Southwestern (Shelby), Trinity Lutheran and White River Valley. The top five teams and the top 10 individuals not on those teams in the sectional qualify for the Columbus North Regional on Oct. 19.

Admission at the sectional is $5 per person.
