Morlok 33rd, Columbus North fifth in girls cross country State Finals

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Senior Olivia Morlok placed 33rd individually on Saturday (Nov. 2), leading the Columbus North girls cross country team to a fifth-place finish in the IHSAA State Finals.

Morlok covered the 5,000-meter layout at the LaVern Gibson Course in 19 minutes, 5.0 seconds as the Bull Dogs used a solid pack to total 195 points and land on the podium for the 19th time in program history.

Freshman Brianna Newell, freshman Lily Baker, junior Mackenzie Barnett and freshman Ellen White provided strong support. Newell placed 36th in 19:06.2, Baker was 42nd in 19:10.5, Barnett finished 44th in 19:10.7 and White placed 125th in 20:21.4.

Rounding out the CN lineup were freshman Jessica Meza, 145th in 20:36.4, and junior Arek Tong, 189th in 21:47.5.

“Our girls gave their typical strong performance,” Columbus North coach Rick Sluder said. “They ran tough in the middle and moved well throughout the race. We did not have our best day, but it is a testament to our team that we can be a little off and still get on the podium at the State Finals.

“Olivia ran very strong and was really motivated to have a great senior state meet. She led our group from a captain’s standpoint all season, so it was fitting she ran No. 1 (Saturday). Brianna, Lily and Mackenzie ran tough races. Each girl battled through tough sections of the race but did not let her teammates down. They hung in as strong as possible and kept us on the podium. Ellen and Jessica fought hard in their first State Finals and came through when it mattered to keep us ahead of Brebeuf Jesuit.”

Carroll (Fort Wayne) repeated as the team champion with 101 points. Junior Zoe Duffus paced the Chargers by placing sixth individually in 18:17.0. Completing their top five were senior Monroe Fruchey (19th in 18:43.1), junior Ashlyn Minton (25th in 18:52.2), senior Mallory Clements (32nd in 19:03.7) and junior Shelby Christman (75th in 19:33.1).

Zionsville was the runner-up with 143 points followed by Carmel with 162, Fishers with 192 and Columbus North in the 24-school competition.

Fort Wayne Dwenger senior Erin Strzelecki captured the individual crown by crossing 17:22.9, well ahead of runner-up Annalyssa Crain of Edgewood. Crain was timed in 17:44.5. Brebeuf Jesuit sophomore Madeline Keller placed third in 18:02.2 followed by Lowell sophomore Karina James in 18:04.3 and Park Tudor freshman Sophia Kennedy in 18:09.7.

South Knox senior Mykayla Couchenour was named winner of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award. She finished 108th individually in 20:02.3.

Columbus North was making its 35th appearance in the girls’ State Finals. Previous top-five team finishes came in 1984 (fifth), 1985 (third), 1986 (second), 1987 (third), 1990 (fifth), 1993 (fourth), 1997 (fourth), 2000 (fourth), 2001 (third), 2002 (fourth), 2004 (fifth), 2009 (first), 2010 (second), 2011 (second), 2012 (third), 2013 (third), 2014 (fifth) and 2015 (third).
