Newell 14th, Bull Dogs fourth in IHSAA boys cross country State Finals

                TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Sophomore Matt Newell claimed all-state accolades by placing 14th individually Saturday (Nov. 2), keying the Columbus North boys cross country team to a fourth-place team finish in the IHSAA State Finals.

                Newell was clocked in 15 minutes, 56.8 seconds as the Bull Dogs amassed 161 points and claim the 11th top-five finish in program history. Sophomore Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff placed 26th individually, one spot out of all-state, in 16:15.5. Junior Andy Stohr finished 47th in 16:26.1, while junior Austin Pulkowski was 66th in 16:34.8 and sophomore Evan Carr finished 80th in 16:45.9.

                Junior Collin Pruitt was 99th in 16:53.5 and sophomore Will Kiel placed 145th in 17:13.3.

                Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran captured the team title with 93 points. Senior Reece Gibson was fifth individually in 15:44.5 to lead the Cadets. Their lineup also included senior Drake Kropf, 17th in 16:00.7; senior Wilson Whicker, 18th in 16:04.7; sophomore Karsten Schlegel, 29th in 16:18.4; and junior Luke Bentz, 67th in 16:35.0.

                Carmel was runner-up with 112 points followed by Brebeuf Jesuit with 135 points, Columbus North and Brownsburg with 214 points.

                Lowell senior Gabriel Sanchez seized the individual title with a time of 15:38.7, 4.2 seconds better than Highland junior Lucas Guerra. Lapel senior Luke Combs was third in 15:38.4 followed by Zionsville junior Jesus Garcia in 15:41.4 and Gibson.

                Combs also was named winner of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award.    

                Columbus North was making its 29th appearance in the boys’ State Finals. Previous top-five team finishes came in 2001 (second), 2002 (first), 2003 (first), 2004 (fifth), 2005 (third), 2009 (first), 2010 (first), 2011 (first), 2013 (second) and 2014 (fourth).
