Columbus North outscores Brownstown Central 46-35 in girls basketball scrimmage

                BROWNSTOWN, Ind. – Junior Madison White scored 11 points Tuesday evening (Nov. 5) as the Columbus North girls basketball team outscored Brownstown Central in a scrimmage played in the Braves’ gym.

                Although the scoreboard was reset to 0-0 to start each period, senior Tessa Lomax chipped in eight points while junior Alexa McKinley provided six points as the Bull Dogs amassed a 46-35 edge when the four varsity quarters were totaled.

                Sophomore Kylah Lawson and freshman Emma Long each chipped in four points, while freshman Lauren Barker tallied three points. Senior Annie Anderson, senior Sierra Norman, senior Riley Eder, junior Kanon Matsuno and sophomore Andrea Justis had two points apiece.

                Freshman Maddy Hackman paced Brownstown with 19 points. Junior Katherine Benter added seven points and junior Avery Koch had six points for the Braves.

                Lomax scored six points while McKinley and White each sank a 3-pointer as Columbus North posted a 16-7 edge in the first of four 12-minute running-clock quarters where specific defensive rules applied to each period. The first quarter had teams play half-court man-to-man defense.

                McKinley and Barker each hit a 3-pointer while Lomax and Norman each made a deuce as CN outscored the hosts 10-4 in the second quarter when both teams had to play half-court zone defense.

                White buried a pair of 3-pointers while Lawson, Long and Matsuno each scored a bucket in the third quarter as the Bull Dogs claimed a 12-5 edge when both teams used a pressing defense.

                In the final quarter, Hackman hit four 3-pointers and Koch added four points as Brownstown claimed a 19-8 advantage in a period when any defense was allowed. Anderson, Long and White each converted a field goal, while Justis went 2-for-2 on free throws for the Columbus North points.

                The team also played one quarter only with JV players, the Bull Dogs winning that quarter 12-4. Barker and Justis each scored four points to pace Columbus North in that period. Long and sophomore Lucy Norman each added two points for the Bull Dogs. Sophomore Andrea Bair and freshman Kaylee Borden scored two points each for the Braves.

                Columbus North opens its season next Tuesday (Nov. 12) when it visits New Albany in a doubleheader. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity will follow about 7:30 p.m. There will be no freshman game that night.
