Eight returning letter winners plus three others look to lead Columbus North to a successful season in 2019-2020.
Junior Alexa McKinley plus seniors Sierra Norman, Annie Anderson and Tessa Lomax are the top holdovers. All four were regular starters in an 18-8 effort last season, and they are complemented by sophomore Kylah Lawson, junior Madison White, junior Kanon Matsuno and senior Riley Eder.
McKinley averaged 10.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 2018-19, while Norman provided 7.6 points and 2.7 rebounds. Anderson contributed 5.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists, while Lomax tallied 5.6 points and team bests of 6.2 rebounds and 1.7 blocks.
Lawson chipped in 4.2 points and 5.1 rebounds, while White averaged 3.6 points. Matsuno and Eder as well as junior Emily Herndon plus freshmen Lauren Barker and Emma Long seek to make an impact.
“If we bring an appropriate amount of energy, focus and enthusiasm, we should have a good team,” CN coach Pat McKee said. “We have some experienced players, so we hopefully will be prepared to face a schedule filled with Class 4A opponents.”
Columbus North opens its season Nov. 12 at New Albany. The Bull Dogs host Martinsville on Nov. 15 for its only home game in November, then complete the month with four more road games – Nov. 19 at Southport, Nov. 26 at Franklin Central and Nov. 30 in the Lawrence North Classic against the host Wildcats and Crown Point.
The Bull Dogs visit Heritage Christian on Dec. 3 and open Conference Indiana action on Dec. 7 at home against Terre Haute South. CN hosts Columbus East on Dec. 19 and the annual Subway/Columbus North Invitational is set for Dec. 27-28 with a field that includes Northwestern, Zionsville, Jeffersonville, Westfield, Mooresville, Elkhart Central and Evansville North.
The Bull Dogs are hopeful of competing well in conference play after seeing a string of seven consecutive titles snapped. They also hope to do well in the sectional after falling in each of the past two seasons. The 2020 sectional will be Feb. 4-8 at Bloomington South.
“Defense, tempo and ball-handling figure to be key factors for this team,” McKee said. “The players and coaches are optimistic about having a good season.”
