Bull Frogs seek to make a splash with boys and girls

The Columbus North swimming teams are hopeful of a strong effort in 2019-2020.

With a cast paced by seniors Olivia Morlok, Betsy King, Erica Samuel and Karlie Brown as well as juniors Riddhi Garg, Christopher Lee, Aidan McAlister, Tristen Cook and Kyan Jiles, the Bull Frogs hope to build through the season and have success in Conference Indiana, sectional and state championship meets.

Last season, the boys claimed Conference Indiana and sectional championships and placed 17th in the IHSAA State Finals. A year ago, the girls were runners-up in the conference and sectional and finished 27th in the state meet.

Morlok, a two-time MVP for the girls, is the top returnee. She placed eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:00.35 and 15th in the 200 free in 1:56.05 at last season’s state meet. King was 18th at state in the 100 free in 52.24 and 19th at state in the 50 free in 24.21. Samuel was 24th at state in the 500 free in 5:12.87. Together, Morlok, Garg, King and Samuel placed 28th at state in the 200 free relay in 1:42.81.

In addition, Garg was seventh in the 100 free in the sectional in 56.92 and eighth in the 50 free in the sectional in 25.78. Brown placed second in the 100 butterfly in the sectional in 1:00.99 and fifth in the 200 individual medley in the sectional in 2:20.98.

“The Lady Frogs are experienced and hungry,” CN coach Logan Schaefer said.

For the boys, Lee was part of a 200 free relay that was eighth at state in 2:16.58 and a 200 medley relay that was 10th at state in 1:35.38. Individually, Lee was 26th at state in the 100 backstroke in 53.61 and 30th at state in the 50 free in 22.06.

Fry placed seventh in the 100 breaststroke in the sectional in 1:06.95 and ninth in the 100 fly in the sectional at 59.07. McAlister was third in the 500 free in the sectional in 4:59.90 and ninth in the 200 free in the sectional in 1:51.80. Cook finished fifth in the 100 fly in the sectional in 56.63 and 12 th in the 50 free in the sectional in 23.55. Jiles was sixth in diving in the sectional with 314.15 points.

“The boys have depth in the sprint freestyle and look for teammates to contribute in championship meets in the stroke and 200-yard events,” Schaefer said.

The girls open their season Nov. 19 with a girls-only home meet against Franklin Central. Both the boys and girls host Franklin on Nov. 26, and both teams visit North Central on Nov. 30. December highlights include a dual at Columbus East on Dec. 10, the Columbus North Relays on Dec. 14 and the Holiday Splash meet at Hamilton Southeastern on Dec. 21. The CI meet is Jan. 25 at Southport. Columbus North hosts the girls’ sectional on Feb. 6-8 and the boys sectional on Feb. 20-22.
