Shoultz named Columbus North varsity volleyball coach

Quin Shoultz has been named varsity volleyball coach at Columbus North High School, Bull Dogs athletic director Jeff Hester announced Friday (Jan. 10).

Shoultz, 24, a 2013 Columbus North graduate and three-sport athlete, served as a Columbus North assistant coach for the 2019 season. Shoultz was a four-year college volleyball player and followed by working for two years in the University of Southern Indiana strength and conditioning program prior to returning to Columbus North for the 2019-2020 school year.

“I am quite excited about this opportunity,” Shoultz said. “I wasn’t really expecting this to be available to me at this time, but this is a great chance to lead the program. I hope to bring something new and exciting, and hopefully I will be able to get some more people interested to come to North to play volleyball.”

As a high school athlete, Shoultz competed in volleyball, basketball and track and field. She earned team MVP honors in volleyball and track and field as well as being a two-year starter in basketball. She went on to  play one season of volleyball at the University of Indianapolis, then transferred to Southern Indiana and played three seasons for the Screaming Eagles.

Prior to college, Shoultz also competed with the Bloomington-based Hoosierland Volleyball Club in addition to her high school sports.

At USI, the 5-foot-9 setter completed her career ranked sixth in career assists with 2,168. As a sophomore in 2014, she averaged 9.92 assists per set, 2.31 digs per set and 0.69 blocks per set. As a junior in 2015, she averaged 10.16 assists per set, 2.22 digs per set and 0.54 blocks per set. As a senior in 2016, she averaged 7.86 assists per set, 2.30 digs per set and 0.42 blocks per set.

Shoultz also competed in track and field for one season at USI, leaping 15-9½ inches in the long jump, the fifth-best mark in USI program history. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in from USI.

The new coach – who also works as an administrative assistant at Blondie’s Salon & Spa in Columbus – said her background as a player and coach should help her be successful.

“I have experienced the highs and the lows in competition, so I think that makes me more relatable to the players,” Shoultz said. “I think my knowledge as a player and my time as a coach will help me carry myself as a coach. I also am excited to bring my background in strength and conditioning to the program.”

Hester was delighted that Shoultz accepted the position.

“Quin’s enthusiasm for volleyball is evident,” Hester said. “That accompanied with her playing background, competing at a high level and her history as a former athlete here will make her a great fit at Columbus North.”

Shoultz becomes the 10th volleyball coach for a Columbus North program that was started in the fall of 1977. She succeeds Caitlin Greiner, who resigned in November after compiling a 102-147 record in eight seasons, including an 8-17 mark and fourth-place Conference Indiana finish in 2019.
