Bloomington South rallies past Columbus North 48-45 in girls basketball

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Kristen Ridner scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter to key a 25-point period Saturday (Jan. 11), leading the Bloomington South girls basketball team to a 48-45 come-from-behind victory over Columbus North in Memorial Gym.

                Senior Anneke Furr and senior Lauren Conner each scored a team-high 10 points for the Panthers, who improved to 12-6 for the season and 4-0 in Conference Indiana while clinching a milestone for coach Larry Winters. The decision was Winters’ 300th triumph in his 21st season at the Bloomington South girls coach.

                Senior Cameron Gillard also scored eight points, while senior Olivia Blackketter tallied six points and senior Clara Voskuil had four points for the winners.

                Junior Alexa McKinley scored a game-high 17 points for the Bull Dogs, who fell to 11-7 overall and 2-2 in league play. Junior Madison White added 10 points while freshman Lauren Barker notched eight points for CN.

                Blackketter scored four points and Conner had three points as Bloomington South took a 9-8 lead in the first quarter. McKinley countered with six points and Barker tallied five points in the second quarter as Columbus North took a 22-13 lead at intermission.

                Furr scored four points while Conner and Gillard each scored three points in the third quarter as the Panthers cut their deficit to 27-23 at the third stop. Ridner scored eight points, Furr added six points – including several key late-game free throws – and Gillard had five points as the visitors pulled out the decision that clinched at least a first-place tie in league play. They can claim an outright CI title with a victory over Terre Haute South on Jan. 23.

                Columbus North prevailed in both sub-varsity contests.

                In the JV game, sophomore Lucy Norman scored 17 points and junior Kanon Matsuno provided 16 points as the Bull Dogs posted a 58-40 triumph. Freshman Emma Long chipped in eight points, while freshman Rylie Boezeman and junior Annaleigh Matzar each had four points for CN (14-1). Freshman Raine Rolen scored 17 points for Bloomington South. Sophomore Olivia Shields and freshman Mya Lawrence each chipped in eight points for the Panthers.

                At the freshman level, Amelia Thompson scored five points to lead Columbus North to a 22-17 decision. Karissa Bevis, Moana Steele and Medi Guest each added four points, while Emma Gray tallied three points and Haylee Cain had two points for the Bull Dogs (9-3). Caitlin Helm scored a game-high 13 points for Bloomington South.

                The Columbus North varsity and JV returns to action on Friday (Jan. 17) at Lawrenceburg. The JV game begins at 6:30 p.m., and the varsity follows at about 8 p.m. The CN freshman team visits Carmel at 6 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 15). The Bull Dogs’ freshman team also plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Jan. 17) at Mooresville in conjunction with the CN-Mooresville boys’ tripleheader.
