JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – Columbus North seniors Keandre Watson and Nick Holt each qualified for the Evansville Semi-State with their performance Saturday (Feb. 8) in the Jeffersonville Regional.
Watson placed second at 138 pounds, while Holt finished third at 170 pounds to headline the Bull Dogs’ efforts and punch their tickets to next Saturday (Feb. 15) in the Ford Center in Evansville. Competition there will begin at 9 a.m. CST (10 a.m. EST).
The top four finishers from the regional in each weight class advance to the semi-state. The top four finishers in the semi-state earn a spot in the IHSAA State Finals on Feb. 21-22 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Watson pinned Jeffersonville’s Hayden Bartle at the 58-second mark of their quarterfinal match. Watson followed by pinning New Washington’s Jason Proffitt at 3:07 of the semifinal match. In the final, Columbus East’s Jacob Shaver edged Watson 4-3.
Holt opened his day by pinning Corydon Central’s Joseph Gohl at the 2:42 mark of their quarterfinal encounter. Madison’s Van Skinner pinned Holt at the 3:28 mark of the semifinal round, but Holt rebounded to claim a 5-4 decision over Tell City’s Nigel Kaiser in the third-place match.
Columbus North sophomore Hector De Dios and senior Adam Behling also competed in the regional, but each dropped his quarterfinal match. New Washington’s Austin Taylor pinned De Dios at the 1:40 mark of their 160-pound encounter, while Jeffersonville’s Ethan Rogers pinned Behling at the 3:27 mark of the 220-pound clash.
As a team, the Bull Dogs totaled 29 points and placed ninth of 22 schools in the regional. Watson moved his season record to 17-2, while Holt moved his record to 26-6. De Dios completed his season at 12-16, while Behling finished 18-19.
Columbus East, with four individual champions, amassed 165.5 points to claim the team championship. Jeffersonville was runner-up with 115 points followed by Tell City with 114, Madison with 84, Charlestown with 83.5, Brown County with 48, Seymour with 36, Eastern (Pekin) with 32 and Columbus North.
