Barker reaches 1,000 career points as Bull Dogs beat East Central 77-54 in boys basketball

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Blake Barker scored 22 points and reached 1,000 points for his career Saturday (Feb. 8), leading the Columbus North boys basketball team to a 77-54 victory over East Central in Memorial Gym.

Senior Nicholas Schiavello contributed 16 points while senior Casper Clark and junior Jakub Trusina each added eight points as the Bull Dogs improved to 15-3 for the season. Junior Reese Harmon and freshman Cooper Horn each provided seven points, while senior Cameron Wischmeyer tallied six points.

Junior Logan Rohrbacher scored 13 points and junior A.J. Messmore netted 10 points to pace the Trojans (12-6).

Barker became the seventh Columbus High or Columbus North player to reach 1,000 points for his career when he dunked the ball with about four minutes to go in the fourth quarter. He entered the game with 979 points, so the dunk – which came off an inbound play where he received the ball at the elbow off a pass from Harmon, then drove left for the finish – pushed his total to 1,001.

Those ahead of Barker on the CHS/CNHS career scoring list are 2015 graduate Josh Speidel with 1,512 points, 1963 graduate Bill Russell with 1,272 points, 2014 graduate Evan Henry with 1,200 points, 1968 graduate Tom Arnholt with 1,075 points, 1964 graduate Jerry Newsom with 1,072 points and 2007 graduate Bobby Hayes with 1,005 points.

In Saturday’s game, Schiavello scored six points, while Harmon netted five points and Barker had four points as Columbus North jumped to a 21-13 lead in the first quarter. Schiavello and Clark each tallied four points in the second quarter as the Bull Dogs pushed the count to 36-27 at intermission.

Barker scored eight points while Trusina tallied six points and Schiavello netted four points in the third quarter as the hosts made it 58-43 at the third stop. Barker hit two free throws, a 3-pointer and the milestone-setting dunk for seven points in the final period as Columbus North closed out the decision.

Schiavello’s output pushed his career total to 606 points. That ties him with 1989 graduate Braden McCormick for 30th place on CHS/CNHS career scoring list.

The teams split contests at the sub-varsity levels.

In the JV game, Reid Cleary scored 11 points and Jadyn Dennis chipped in nine points as the Trojans pulled out a 48-47 decision. Caleb Mergenthal added eight points, while Devin Gaines, Casey McQueen and Luke Vogeglesang each scored six points. Junior Max Wilson scored 17 points to pace the Bull Dogs (13-2). Junior Trevor Wright provided nine points, while sophomores Sam King and Will Baker each netted six points.

In the freshman game, Ty Ferguson and Leon Brown each scored 12 points to propel Columbus North to a 56-29 triumph. Zach Horn added nine points and Luke Harmon had six points for the Bull Dogs (20-0). Cole Wheat paced East Central with 11 points.

Columbus North returns to action on Friday (Feb. 14) when it hosts Bloomington South in a doubleheader in Memorial Gym. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows at about 7:30 p.m. The Bull Dogs’ freshman team completes its season at 6 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 11) when it hosts Franklin in a freshman-only game.
