Bull Frogs place three individuals and two relays in six spots at girls swimming State Finals

                Three Columbus North athletes and two relays have qualified for six spots in the IHSAA girls swimming State Finals this weekend at the Natatorium at IUPUI in Indianapolis.

                Seniors Betsy King and Olivia Morlok each earned a spot in the state meet with respective victories in the 50- and 500-yard freestyle events in the Columbus North Sectional.

                King also received a “call back” in the 100 free, while senior Erica Samuel will join Morlok in the 500 free after receiving a “call back” in that event.

                And the Bull Frogs’ 200 free relay and 400 free relay squads also received “call backs” to the state meet.

                King is seeded 21st in the 50 free at 24.19 and 16th in the 100 free at 52.38. Morlok is seeded 10th and Samuel is seeded 20th in the 500 free with respective times of 5:03.29 and 5:06.74.

                The CN 200 free relay of King, junior Riddhi Garg, sophomore Bryleigh Shaffstall and Morlok is seeded 22nd in 1:39.63. The Bull Frogs’ 400 free relay of King, Garg, Samuel and Morlok is seeded 17th at 3:36.23.

                A list of top seeds for the 11 swimming events are listed below.

                The preliminary round of the State Finals is at 6 p.m. Friday (Feb. 14). The top 16 performers on Friday return at 1 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 15), the top eight competing in the championship final and the second eight competing in a consolation final.

                Carmel is the 33-time defending state champion and is expected to extend its streak to 34 crowns in a row.

                Columbus North placed 27th as a team in the 2019 state meet with Morlok eighth in the 500 free (5:00.35) and 15th in the 200 (1:56.05). King was 18th in the 100 free (52.24) and 19th in the 50 free (24.21), while Samuel was 24th in the 500 free (5:12.87) at state a year ago. Also, King, Garg, Samuel and Morlok placed 28th at state in the 200 free relay last season (1:42.81).

                Tickets are $8 per session or $15 for a two-day pass.

                100 backstroke: Berit Berglund, Carmel, 54.04. State-meet record: Claire Adams, Carmel, 51.65 in 2016.
