Six Columbus North senior basketball players have received honorable mention Academic All-State accolades from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, it was announced Tuesday (March 17).
CNHS senior boys Nicholas Schiavello and Cameron Wischmeyer as well as CNHS girls Annie Anderson, Riley Eder, Tessa Lomax and Sierra Norman each was cited in the IBCA Academic All-State awards program, where academic prowess and athletic prowess both are considered in the selections. Items such as grade-point average, college board scores and academic class rank are considered along with athletic performance in areas such as points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game.
Only seniors are eligible for IBCA Academic All-State. IBCA-member head coaches from across the state may nominate their seniors who meet criteria that include a 3.5 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale, a class rank in the upper 25 percent of one’s class, an SAT score of 1,100 or better (on the math and reading sections) or a composite score of 24 or better on the ACT.
Once nominations are received, an IBCA committee reviews the information and determines awards for first team an honorable mention. In total, 40 boys and 32 girls were selected IBCA first-team Academic All-State for 2020. In addition, 192 boys and 189 girls were named IBCA honorable mention Academic All-State.
The IBCA has selected an Academic All-State team for boys since 1973. The program was expanded to include a girls’ Academic All_State team in 1980.
The four Columbus North girls basketball seniors previously were recognized as Academic All-State in a separate program overseen by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. Eder and Norman were named ICGSA first-team Academic All-State, while Anderson and Lomax were selected ICGSA honorable mention Academic All-State.
In yet another separate honor, 15 Columbus North girls basketball players have been named to the Academic Honors Court by the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association. The HBCA academic accolade requires a 3.2 or better GPA and is open to players in all grades on the sectional roster. Anderson, Eder, Lomax, Sierra Norman as well as Reagan Ables, Lauren Barker, Rylie Boezeman, Emily Herndon, Andrea Justis, Emma Long, Kanon Matsuno, Alexa McKinley, Lucy Norman, Moana Steele and Madison White each earned a spot on the HBCA Honors Court.
