Columbus North wins Conference Indiana girls golf crown with conference-record 299; Anderson wins individual title with 72

EDINBURGH, Ind. – Junior Gwen Anderson fired a career-best 72 on Monday (Sept. 14), leading the Columbus North girls golf team to the championship of the Conference Indiana Tournament.

Senior Nathaly Munnicha added a 74, while Ella Wilks contributed a career-best 75 as the No. 7 Bull Dogs posted a tournament-record and season-best 299 as a team. Senior Yestika Nischol and junior Macy Euler each carded a 78 as the five Columbus North players all claimed all-conference accolades by finishing in the top five positions.

Terre Haute South shot a 368 to finish as the runner-up. Terre Haute North was third with a 379 followed by Southport at 381, Bloomington South at 382 and Bloomington North 396.

Terre Haute North’s Nikki Bonilla, Terre Haute South’s Sophie Boyll and Grace Kidwell, Bloomington South’s Kate Lewis and Southport’s Marissa Munoz completed the all-conference team. Bonilla shot an 82, Boyll an 83, Kidwell and 84, Lewis an 87 and Munoz an 88.

Those cited as honorable mention all-conference were Bloomington North’s Savannah Honeycutt with a 91, Terre Haute North’s Karson Hart with a 92 and Bloomington South’s Isabelle Haines-Fields, Terre Haute South’s Abi Haller and Terre Haute North’s Rylee Roscoe all with 95s.

The Bull Dogs’ team total was three strokes better than the previous tournament record of 302, set by Columbus North in 2008 and equaled by the Bull Dogs last year. Columbus North now has won five consecutive CI team titles, seven of the past eight and 12 of the past 14 in the event that dates to 1997.

Anderson joined her sister Annie and four other Columbus North players to claim individual medalist honors over the years. Taylor Gohn won the crown in 2007 and 2009, Erinn Sutton prevailed in 2008, Alexandra Munnicha was medalist in 2016, Annie Anderson took first in 2018 and Nathaly Munnicha was the individual champion in 2019.

Gwen Anderson’s round included four birdies, two bogeys and one double-bogey. She three-putted for boey on No. 16 to put her 1-over par but recovered with a birdie on No. 17 after hitting an approach shot to about 3 feet from the pin. Her previous best 18-hole score was a 77.

Gwen Anderson showed remarkable year-to-year improvement in this event at the same course. She shot an 89 last season, earning honorable mention all-conference with a 12th-place finish in 2019. Nathaly Munnicha, Wilks and Nischol all were first-team all-conference in 2018 and 2019, and Nathaly Munnicha also was first-team all-conference in 2017.

Wilks’ round set a career best, three strokes better than a 78 at last year’s CI meet. Euler’s 78 also was a career-best round.

Columbus North returns to action at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 15) when it faces Columbus East in a dual match at Otter Creek Golf Club. That is the Bull Dogs’ final regular-season match of the season. Columbus North follows by competing in the Bloomington North Sectional next Monday (Sept. 21) at Cascades Golf Course in Bloomington.
