East Central edges Columbus North 2-1 in boys soccer

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Eric Puterbaugh and sophomore Chance Muncy each score a first-half goal Monday evening (Sept. 14), lifting the East Central boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Columbus North at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.

                Junior Jesse Williams found the net for the Bull Dogs late in the second half, but the hosts were unable to convert an equalizer in the remaining time.

                The Trojans improved to 7-1-1 with the decision. Columbus North dropped to 3-3-4.

                Puterbaugh opened the scoring in the 18th minute on a corner kick set piece. Sophomore J.T. Roden tapped the ball from the corner to Puterbaugh, who dribbled into the penalty area and scored from about 10 yards out.

                Muncy doubled the Trojans’ lead in the 29th minute, knocking in a rebound opportunity.

                Williams cut CN’s deficit in half in the 79th minute. Freshman Ian Jackson started the play with a pass from midfield to Williams, who received the ball in the box and found the net from about 11 yards away.

                Senior Colvin Iorio played the full game in the nets, making nine saves while facing 11 shots on goal.

                For the game, East Central totaled 15 shots and 11 shots on goal. Columbus North countered with 20 shots but just six shots on goal.

                Sophomore Mateo Mendez totaled six shots with three shots on goal. Williams tallied six shots with one shot on goal. Junior Nathan White produced three shots, while freshman Aidan Whitley had two shots with both on goal.

                At the JV level, sophomore Trent Liggett scored two goals as the Bull Dogs prevailed 4-2. Sophomore Nathan Imlay and freshman Marco Figuero also found the net for CN (5-2-3). Figueroa, Imlay and freshman Nico Gotoh each tallied an assist. Sophomore Lukas Iorio played the first half in the nets, allowing no goals with one save. Freshman Christopher Perez played the second half in the nets.

                Columbus North returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 19) when it hosts Terre Haute North in a Conference Indiana contest. The JV game begins at 11 a.m., and the varsity follows at about 12:30 p.m. The Bull Dogs follow by traveling to Bloomington South for another CI encounter next Tuesday (Sept. 22).
