North Central boys tennis tops Columbus North 4-1 in state quarterfinals; Bull Dogs complete season at 17-2

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Freshmen Anvay Atram and Amrit Kar prevailed in their doubles match, but it was not enough as the Columbus North boys tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to North Central on Friday (Oct. 16) in the quarterfinal round of the IHSAA team State Finals.

Atram and Kar defeated NC seniors Seraj Hamid and Jerem Moorman 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, but that was the only point for the No. 13 Bull Dogs as they saw their season end with a 17-2 record and a tie for fifth in the team state tournament.

The third-ranked Panthers captured points at the other four positions:

                >> Senior Ajay Mahenthiran outlasted Bull Dogs junior Nathan Lin 7-6 (3), 6-3 at No. 1 singles.

                >> Freshman Alex Antonopolous topped CN junior Matthew Liu 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

                >> Sophomore Maurquis Willingham beat Bull Dogs senior Joseph Kloepfer 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

                >> Senior Jackson Hahn and junior Andrew Hoggstrom defeated CN senior Luke Enneking and junior Eric Stavnheim 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

North Central improved to 16-4 and moved into a semifinal match at 10 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 17) on their its home court against No. 5 Munster (19-1), a 3-2 winner over No. 7 Center Grove (18-6).

“We honestly got beat by a better team,” CN coach Kendal Hammel said. “They are very solid in singles as we expected. In a couple of spots, we just couldn’t get anything going. Anvay and Amrit had a really nice match and improved after some early nerves. I was really glad for those two guys.

“Nathan had a really tough match but competed well at 1 singles. It was fun and a high level of play between those guys. He had some opportunities to take the first set. I was proud of how he played even after we had lost the (team) match.”

In the other quarterfinal matches at Carmel, Carmel (21-0) and Jasper (18-3) each earned spots in the other semifinal match. The top-ranked Greyhounds defeated No. 4 Homestead 5-0 and the No. 11 Wildcats topped Brownsburg 3-2. Homestead ended its season at 17-5, and Brownsburg closed at 15-7.

Columbus North was in the IHSAA team State Finals for the third consecutive season and the ninth time in program history. The Bull Dogs reached the State Finals previously in 1972 (fourth), 1979 (fourth), 1982 (fourth), 1989 (third), 2007 (fourth), 2008 (third), 2018 (fifth) and 2019 (third).

“It was a great year for our team, especially considering all that has been going on (with the COVID-19 pandemic),” Hammel said. “We won Conference Indiana, got to the State Finals again and both of our losses came to opponents that were ranked in the top four at the time of the match and both also reached the State Finals.”

Carmel is the four-time defending team state champion. The Greyhounds have won 12 team state titles prior to this season.
