COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus North swept the top three places and had seven of the top-10 finishers on Saturday (Oct. 17), running to a big victory in the girls cross country regional at CeraLand Park.
Senior Mackenzie Barnett paced the field, covering the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 4.3 seconds to claim the individual crown. Sophomores Brianna Newell and Lily Baker finished second and third, posting respective times of 18:19.3 and 18:31.5.
Sophomore Julie Klaus and junior Abby Jacobi completed CN’s top five, while sophomores Ellen White and Jessica Meza rounded out the Bull Dogs’ lineup. Klause placed sixth in 18:58.2, while Jacobi was seventh in 18:58.4. White finished ninth in 19:11.2, and Meza placed 10th in 19:17.0.
The No. 3 Bull Dogs totaled a near-perfect 19 points in claiming their 12th consecutive regional title and the program’s 31st overall. Brown County finished second with 85 points followed by Seymour with 105, Columbus East with 121 and Jennings County with 138.
“Our girls ran absolutely amazing,” CN coach Rick Sluder said. “From 1 to 7, it was a tremendous effort. We had five personal bests and another just off it. We had five girls break 19 minutes for the first time in a long time. Scoring 19 points and putting seven in the top 10 is something this team should be proud of accomplishing.”
Sluder elaborated about individual efforts.
“Mackenzie Barnett did a great job of leading again and ran the No. 2 time in school history,” he said. “To win the sectional and regional as a senior shows exactly what hard work can accomplish. Brianna Newell also ran a top-10 time in program history with an amazing 18:19, and Lily Baker completed our 1-2-3- with another PR of 18:31.
“Julie Klaus and Abby Jacobi each ran PRs to finish out five under 19 minutes, while Ellen White and Jessica Meza probably ran as well as any sixth and seventh runners in the state to bump all runners in the meet except three back two spots. Just a lights-out performance from top to bottom.”
The top five teams and the top 10 individuals not on those teams earned a spot in the Brown County Semi-State next Saturday (Oct. 24) at Eagle Park. The top six teams and top 10 individuals not on those teams in the semi-state will qualify for the IHSAA State Finals on Oct. 31 at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute.
Columbus North is seeking its second straight semi-state crown and the eighth in program history. Previous CN semi-state titles came in 1992, 2002, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2019.
“This performance (in the regional) should help us prep for the semi-state as we try to defend our title,” Sluder said.
