Columbus North captures crown in boys cross country regional

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff, senior Andy Stohr and junior Evan Carr claimed three of the top four places Saturday (Oct. 17), leading the Columbus North boys cross country team to the championship of the Columbus North Regional.

Kilbarger-Stumpff led the way, winning the 5,000-meter race at CeraLand Park in 15 minutes, 21.3 seconds. Stohr placed second in 15:40.8, and Carr finished fourth in 15:54.6.

Juniors Will Kiel and Matt Newell completed the Columbus North scorers, while seniors Austin Pulkowski and Collin Pruitt rounded out the Bull Dogs’ lineup. Kiel, Newell and Pulkowski finished 6-7-8 with respective times of 16:07.7, 16:14.5 and 16:15.3. Newell, dealing with an injury for much of the season, was on the course for the first time since the Brownsburg 4-Way 4K on Aug. 22.

Pruitt completed the effort for Columbus North placing 29th in 17:35.9.

The top-ranked Bull Dogs scored just 20 points in claiming their 13th consecutive regional title and the program’s 28th overall. Jennings County was the runner-up with 67 points followed by Seymour with 71, Martinsville with 136 and Brown County with 138.

The top five teams and the top 10 individuals not on those teams earned a spot in the Brown County Semi-State next Saturday (Oct. 24) at Eagle Park. The top six teams and top 10 individuals not on those teams in the semi-state will qualify for the IHSAA State Finals on Oct. 31 at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute.

                Columbus North is seeking the 13th semi-state crown in program history but its first since a seven-year string of titles ended 2015. The Bull Dogs previously captured semi-state trophies in 1986, 1987, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
