Barker, White help Columbus North slip past Martinsville 55-49 in girls basketball

                MARTINSVILLE, Ind. – Senior Madison White scored 16 points Friday evening (Nov. 13), including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 31.5 seconds remaining, to spark the Columbus North girls basketball team to a 55-49 victory over Martinsville in John Wooden Gymnasium.

                Sophomore Lauren Barker produced a team-high 17 points and senior Alexa McKinley tallied eight points for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 1-1 for the season. Junior Kylah Lawson provided six points, while junior Andrea Justis netted four points. Senior Emily Herndon and sophomore Emma Long each chipped in two points.

                Senior Pa’Shence Walker scored a game-high 19 points for the host Artesians (2-1). Junior Delaney Wolfe added 11 points, while junior Ashlyn Traylor had nine points and junior Kearsten Willen scored seven points.

                White scored five points and Barker had three points as Columbus North took an 11-9 edge in the first quarter. McKinley scored four points and White added three points as the Bull Dogs pushed the count to 24-19 at intermission.

                Barker scored seven points and Lawson and Justis each scored two points in the third quarter as CN led 35-32 at the third stop. But after CN extended its advantage to double figures, Martinsville roared back for a 49-48 lead on a Pa’Shence Walker basket with 1:17 to go.

                White’s 3-pointer from the right wing regained the lead for Columbus North. Lawson rebounded an Artesians’ miss and followed with two free throws for a four-point edge. Barker closed out the game with a fast-break layup.

                In the JV game, freshman Kathryn Wilson scored a game-high 12 points to lead the Bull Dogs to a 39-25 triumph. Freshman Elise Preston contributed eight points, while freshman Greta Brown tallied five points for CN (2-0). Freshmen Olivia Johnson and Kaitlin White each chipped in four points for the Bull Dogs. Sophomore Madison Short scored 10 points and sophomore Holly Galyan had seven points for Martinsville.

                There was no freshman game.

                Columbus North returns to action on Tuesday (Nov. 17) with two games. The Bull Dogs’ freshman team will host the Salem “C Team” at 6 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym, and the Columbus North varsity will face Southport in a varsity-only game at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Gym. There will be no JV game because Southport is short on players because of COVID-19 contact tracing.
