Roop recognized as MVP of 2020 Columbus North volleyball

Senior Madi Roop was honored as Most Valuable Player of the 2020 Columbus North volleyball team in the squad’s season-ending awards that were announced on Saturday (Nov. 7) on @columbusnorthvb, the team’s Twitter account.

Roop, a 5-10 outside hitter, led the Bull Dogs to a 9-22 season that included a 2-3 mark in Conference Indiana.

Others recognized from the varsity level were senior Ava McKinney, sophomore Logan Branstetter and junior Paige Osbourne. Those cited from the JV team were sophomore Emma Burns, freshman Kaitlin White and sophomore Rylie Boezeman.

McKinney, a 5-1 defensive specialist, was presented the team’s Bull Dog Award. Branstetter, a 5-10 outside hitter, was honored with the Most Improved Award. Osbourne, a 5-6 right-side hitter, was winner of the Jolie Crider Award for upperclassman mental attitude.

Burns, a 5-5 setter, was named MVP of a junior varsity squad that posted a 1-16 record. White, a 5-9 middle hitter, was presented the JV Most Improved Award. Boezeman, a 5-7 all-around player, received the Casey Cooley Award for underclassman mental attitude.

Earlier, junior Sarah Bennett was voted first-team all-Conference Indiana while Roop and junior Reagan Kane were selected honorable mention all-conference.

In addition, Roop, McKinney and classmates Emma Derringer and Madison White were recognized as Academic All-State by the Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association. Honorees for the academic award must have a 3.5 or better GPA on a 4.0 scale. Typically, there also is an SAT or ACT required score, but those were not factored this year because many students were unable to take those assessments because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Roop, Bennett and sophomore Elizabeth Rayburn were cited as team captains at the varsity level, and Boezeman was recognized as the captain of the JV squad.

Twelve participants received varsity letters. They were seniors Emma Derringer, Ava McKinney, Madi Roop and Madison White; juniors Sarah Bennett, Grace Chapman, Sydney Cooper, Reagan Kane, Emma Martin and Paige Osbourne; and sophomores Logan Branstetter and Elizabeth Rayburn.

Recognized as JV players were sophomores Grace Barkes, Rylie Boezeman and Emma Burns; and freshmen Katelynn Mabis, Serenity Mack, Cadence McGraw, Alex Osburn, Roselynn Venegas and Kaitlin White.

Those recognized as freshman team participants were Sofia Alvarado, Lilly Breedlove, Kate Ellis, Laura Heredia, Rachel Roland and Sophia Thomas.
