Columbus North runs past Southport 71-22 in girls basketball

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Sophomore Lauren Barker scored 16 points to lead three players in double figures on Tuesday evening (Nov. 17), keying the Columbus North girls basketball team to a 71-22 victory over Southport in Memorial Gym.

Senior Alexa McKinley contributed 13 points and junior Kylah Lawson tallied 11 points for the Bull Dogs, who saw 10 players reach the scoring column as they improved to 2-1 for the season and captured their Conference Indiana opener.

Sophomore Emma Long and senior Emily Herndon each chipped in eight points, while senior Kanon Matsuno netted four points for CN. In addition, senior Madison White, junior Andrea Justis and freshman Greta Brown scored three points apiece, and junior Lucy Norman had two points.

Senior Gracie Cherry scored 11 points and sophomore Cece Mitchell netted eight points to pace the short-handed Cardinals (0-6, 0-1), who played without several players because of COVID-19 contact tracing.

Barker scored six points, McKinley netted five points and Lawson tallied four points as Columbus North jumped to a 15-5 lead in the first quarter. Long and Herndon each scored six points and Lawson had five points as the Bull Dogs pushed their advantage to 32-8 at intermission.

McKinley scored five points while Barker netted four points in the third quarter as CN pushed the count to 51-20 at the third stop. Barker scored six points while McKinley, White and Brown each had three points as the Bull Dogs closed out the game in the final period.

There was no JV game because Southport did not have enough available players to play at that level.

At the freshman level, Carli Freeman scored 10 of her game-high 13 points in the second half as Columbus North rallied past Salem 29-27. Kelsey Lovelace and Kendall Combest each added six points and Kennedy Gallentine added four points for the Bull Dogs’ freshmen (1-1). Lanie Roberts paced the visiting Lions with eight points.

Columbus North returns to action on Friday (Nov. 20) when it hosts New Albany in a “Coaches vs. Cancer” doubleheader in Memorial Gym. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows at 7:30 p.m. There will be no freshman game. Columbus North senior Luke Bless is coordinating the “Coaches vs. Cancer” program as his senior project.

The CN freshman team is back on the court at 6 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 24) when it hosts Franklin Central in a freshman-only game in the auxiliary gym. The Columbus North-Franklin Central games at the varsity-JV levels that were to be played on Nov. 24 have been postponed to Dec. 1.
