Horn hits game-winning shot as Columbus North nips Terre Haute North 43-42 in boys basketball

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Sophomore Cooper Horn dropped in a layup in the late going Friday evening (Jan. 8), lifting the Columbus North boys basketball team to a 43-42 victory at Terre Haute North.

Senior Blake Barker scored 15 points and Horn contributed 13 points as the visiting Bull Dogs improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in Conference Indiana. Senior Max Wilson chipped in six points, while senior Jakub Trusina tallied five points and senior Reese Harmon had four points.

Junior Mark Hankins netted a team-best 15 points for the host Patriots (4-6, 1-1). Seniors Mahki Johnson and

Noah Crosley added eight points apiece, and senior Matt Gauer had six points.

Down 42-41 with 27.3 seconds to go, Barker was the first option on a play out of a timeout. Horn, however, came open and he scored what proved to be the decisive basket with about 17 seconds to go. Terre Haute North missed on the other end and fouled Harmon on the rebound.

Harmon missed the first of a one-and-one opportunity with 10.9 seconds to go, and Barker missed another one-and-one chance with 2.3 seconds to go. But the Patriots were were unable to convert a desperation 3-point shot from three-quarter court as time expired.

Horn scored seven points while Barker and Wilson had two points apiece in the first quarter as Columbus North took an 11-7 lead. Hankins countered with 11 points while Gauer netted six points in the second quarter as Terre Haute North recovered for a 24-22 edge at intermission.

Harmon scored four points and Trusina tallied three points in the third quarter as CN closed its deficit to 36-25 at the third stop. A Barker basket followed by two Wilson free throws and a Trusina basket combined to have the Bull Dogs down one entering the final 30 seconds of the game.

The teams split the sub-varsity contests.

At the JV level, junior Noah Abfall scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the first half as the Bull Dogs captured a 47-43 triumph. Sophomore Luke Harmon chipped in 11 points, all in the second half, and junior Rhett Harmon netted nine points for Columbus North (7-2). Sophomore Cole Higham paced the host Patriots with 14 points.

In the freshman game, Kavish Reddy scored 12 points and Jack Halls tallied eight points as Terre Haute North prevailed 30-9. Phillip McKinley had three points to lead the Bull Dogs (10-2), who saw their nine-game winning streak snapped.

Columbus North is scheduled to return to action next Friday (Jan. 15) in a home tripleheader against Mooresville. JV and freshman games are set for 6 p.m., and the varsity game follows the JV at 7:30 p.m. The Bull Dogs also are supposed to host Fishers in a home tripleheader next Saturday (Jan. 16). However, Morgan County (Mooresville) and Hamilton County (Fishers), both currently in red, need to move to orange in the Indiana State Department of Health COVID color dashboard on Wednesday (Jan. 13) for these games to be played as scheduled.
