McKinley scores career-high 22 points, Columbus North tops 4A No. 6 East Central 61-51 in girls basketball

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Alexa McKinley scored a career-high 22 points Thursday evening (Jan. 14), leading the Columbus North girls basketball team to a 61-51 upset over Class 4A No. 6 East Central in Memorial Gym.

                Junior Kylah Lawson contributed 14 points and sophomore Lauren Barker netted 10 points as the host Bull Dogs improved to 6-3 for the season. Senior Kanon Matsuno chipped in eight points, while sophomore Emma Long tallied four points and senior Madison White had three points.

                Sophomore Josie Trabel scored a team-high 17 points for the visiting Trojans, who dropped to 13-3. Sophomore Julia Tiemann and sophomore Laney Baker each added eight points, while junior Hope Fox scored seven points.

                McKinley scored seven points and Lawson had four points in the first quarter as Columbus North took a 16-9 lead. McKinley netted eight points while Barker added three points and Lawson had two points in the second quarter as the Bull Dogs pushed their advantage to 29-22 at intermission.

                Lawson scored five points and Long had four points in the third quarter as CN made it 43-32 at the third stop. East Central cut its deficit to 47-42 on a Baker basket with 5:16 remaining. But White countered with a 3-pointer on CN’s next possession and Barker hit another big 3-pointer as the hosts held on for the decision.

                At the JV level, sophomore Caitlyn Dick scored 13 points and sophomore Laney Baker added 11 points as East Central rallied for a 49-42 triumph. Sophomore Brooke Carpenter chipped in eight points for the Trojans, who used a 24-11 fourth quarter to overcome a 31-25 deficit at the third stop. Sophomore Maddi Rutan score nine points to lead the Bull Dogs (7-1). Freshman Greta Brown, Elise Preston and Olivia Johnson each added seven points.

                There was no freshman team game.

                The Columbus North freshman team plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Jan. 15) when it faces Mooresville in the CNHS Auxiliary Gym. That game with be part of a basketball quadruple-header – three boys’ games and the one girls’ game.

                All three Columbus North girls basketball teams are in action on Saturday (Jan. 16) with all three games in Memorial Gym. The freshman team plays Bishop Chatard at 11:30 a.m. That game is followed by a varsity-JV doubleheader with Lawrenceburg, the JV game at 1 p.m. and the varsity about 2:30 p.m.
