Bull Dogs use balance to beat Mooresville 65-56 in boys basketball; Barker moves to second on CHS/CNHS all-time scoring list

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Reese Harmon scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the second half Friday evening (Jan. 15), leading the Columbus North boys basketball team to a 65-56 victory over Mooresville in Memorial Gym.

                Senior Blake Barker and sophomore Cooper Horn each contributed 17 points for the balanced Bull Dogs, who improved to 8-2 for the season. Junior Sam King chipped in six points, while seniors Jakub Trusina, Max Wilson and Diing Diing netted two points apiece.

                Senior Miles McGowen tallied a game-high 21 points for the visiting Pioneers (5-5). Senior Dane Stevenson  added 12 points, while junior Zach Woodson tallied 11 points and senior Luke Fowler had 10 points.

                Horn scored nine points and Harmon had six points in the first quarter as Columbus North claimed a 20-14 lead. Barker tallied six points and King had three points as the Bull Dogs maintained its margin at 33-27 at intermission.

                Harmon scored seven points and Barker netted five points in the third quarter as CN pushed its advantage to 53-41 at the third stop. Harmon scored six points and Barker had four points in the final period as the hosts closed out the decision.

                Barker’s scoring output pushed his career total to 1,281 points, good to pass Bill Russell for second place on the all-time CHS/CNHS list. Russell totaled 1,272 points in a Columbus High career from 1959-63. The Bull Dogs’ all-time scoring leader is Josh Speidel, a 2015 graduate who totaled 1,512 points.

                The programs split the sub-varsity contests.

                At the JV level, junior Carson Dibble scored 10 points and the Bull Dogs overcame a third-quarter deficit to prevail 43-40. Sophomore Ty Ferguson and freshman Connor Hensley each provided nine points, while sophomore Luke Harmon added eight points for CN (8-2). Junior Rhett Harmon netted three points. Junior Dayton DeVaughan and junior Hunter Overholser each scored eight points to pace Mooresville.

                In the freshman game, Nate Thomas scored nine points and the visiting Pioneers used a fourth-quarter rally to capture a 35-29 triumph. Alec Dennis, Jai Dindiyai, Leri Dorn and Abe Sherratt added six points apiece for Mooresville. Phillip McKinley and Blake Osbourne each scored eight points to pace the Bull Dogs (10-3). Nate Corley chipped in six points, while Dillon James netted four points and Ivan Leal had three points.

                Columbus North returns to action next Saturday (Jan. 23) when it visits Perry Meridian for a tripleheader. JV and freshman games each begin at 3 p.m., and the varsity will follow the JV at about 4:30 p.m.

                The Bull Dogs’ tripleheader against Fishers that was to be Saturday (Jan. 16) has been postponed. A new date for that three-game clash has not been determined.
