The varsity girls’ basketball coaching position is open at Columbus North High School.
Pat McKee, who guided the Bull Dogs to a Class 4A state championship in 2015, has stepped down from his coaching position after 11 seasons with the program.
During his tenure, Columbus North captured eight Conference Indiana championships, a City Securities Hall of Fame Classic championship, five holiday tournament championships, six sectional championships, four regional championships and three semi-state championships in addition to the state championship. McKee completes his time at Columbus North with a 230-56 overall record and a 63-6 record in Conference Indiana games.
“All of these accomplishments are a credit to the student-athletes who have been a part of the program,” McKee said. “Their talent, work ethic and day-to-day focus allowed the Bull Dogs to achieve many goals.”
Validating that point, the program produced an Indiana Miss Basketball, McDonald’s All-American and MaxPreps National Player of the Year in Ali Patberg, four Indiana All-Stars in Patberg, Courtney Larson, Tayler Goodall and Maliah Howard-Bass, five Indiana Junior All-Stars in Goodall, Patberg, Howard-Bass, Imani Guy and Ashlyn Huffman as well as 11 seniors invited to the annual Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top 60 Senior Workout in Larson, Kelsey Cunningham, Tayler Goodall, Debie Gedeon, Patberg, Paige Littrell, Elle Williams, Guy, Howard-Bass, Huffman and Alexa McKinley.
In addition, 21 Bull Dogs earned either IBCA or ICGSA Academic All-State recognition, Larson and Patberg were honored as winners of the Jack Cramer Ideals of Athletic Competition Award from Columbus Parks and Recreation, and Patberg and Littrell were presented the IHSAA Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award among various other accolades collected by Columbus North student-athletes during the time McKee served as caretaker of the program.
Of course, much credit for the program’s success goes to the assistant coaches. They include 2020-21 assistants RaNae Isaak Ron Patberg, Brett White, Jim Hilderbrand, Joe Wetzel and Jasmine O’Conner as well as former assistants Alan Vickrey, Ashley Hilderband Slate, Stephanie Ford Schott, Missy Wade Satterfield, Jennifer Monroe and Karen McCaa.
McKee came to Columbus North in April 2010 after a full-time career as a writer and editor for The Indianapolis Star. He also had been a women’s basketball assistant coach at Butler University for four seasons as well as the head coach of several Indianapolis-based girls’ basketball travel teams for 16 seasons prior to joining the Bull Dogs’ family.
“I have made many friends in the Columbus North school community and in the Columbus community in general,” McKee said. “I will miss the regular interaction with those people. However, the time has arrived for me to step aside and allow for new leadership for the Columbus North program. I still will continue to support the program, just from a new perspective.”
Anyone interested in the open position should contact Columbus North athletic director Brian Lewis.
