Junior Hector De Dios was recognized as most valuable athlete of the 2020-21 Columbus North wrestling team Friday (March 26) at the team awards program.
De Dios reached the semi-state round of the state tournament series, falling in the first round at that level and finishing with a 16-7 individual record while competing at the 160- and 170-pound weight classes during the season. He placed third in both the Jennings County Sectional and Jeffersonville Regional. Along the way, he posted a team best of 26 escapes and score the most team points with 81.
He did this for a Bull Dogs’ team that went 7-7 in dual matches, placed fourth in the sectional and tied for sixth in the regional.
Those joining De Dios with special awards were junior Bryce Abner, sophomore Liam Phillips, sophomore Cody Thurnall, freshman Jason Shuey and sophomore Anthony Johnson.
Abner was the winner of the Bull Dog Award after he placed fourth in the sectional and finished with an 11-11 record at 152 pounds. He also was recognized for the team lead in takedowns with 21.
Phillips was the recipient of the Most Improved Award, while Thurnall won the Larry Perkinson Mental Attitude Award and Shuey was presented the Brandon Shehan Award as the team’s outstanding freshman who also displayed excellent sportsmanship and a strong work ethic.
Phillips finished third in the sectional and posted a 10-12 mark at 145 pounds. Thurnall placed fourth in the sectional and finished with a 5-12 slate at 285 pounds. Shuey finished second in the sectional, second in the regional, participated in the semi-state and closed with a 14-10 record at 120 pounds. He also was cited for the most pins with 11.
Johnson was the winner of the Most Improved Award at the JV level.
De Dios, Abner and senior Keegan Hill were recognized as team captains and were three of 18 letter winners. Other letter winners were juniors Tristen Dyette, Jared Slocum II and James Thompson; sophomores Anthony Johnson, Jerry Newland, Liam Phillips, Jaedin Richards, Oscar Rubio and Cody Thurnall; and freshmen Keller Despain, Josiah Green, Brysen Hutt, Eddy Lin, Liam Milne and Jason Shuey.
Other athletes in the program were junior Sebastian Ibarra plus sophomores Jonatan Martinez, Jake Shively and Ryan Staley.
Recognized as managers were freshmen Jada Castillo, Karina Hernandez, Jazmin Merino and Adriana Ortiz.
