Varsity girls tennis team go 3-0 at Avon Invitational

May 1, 2021 - Coach Kendal Hammel has been eyeing the Avon Invitational on the schedule for quite some time, knowing that the level of competition at the event would be outstanding for his fourth-ranked Bull Dogs.  The matchups they faced Saturday did not disappoint, nor did the performance of his players.  The Bull Dogs took on 15th-ranked Jasper, followed by ninth-ranked Penn, and finally seventh-ranked Avon, defeating all three to go undefeated on the day.  The JV team also beat Jasper (4-1) and Penn (5-0), but fell to Avon (2-3).

In the first round of the morning, the Bull Dogs defeated Jasper 3-2. Kathryn Wilson got the round started with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the number two singles, followed soon thereafter by a 6-2, 6-0 victory by Ashlie Wilson at the number one singles. The Dogs moved to 3-0 with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-2 victory at the number one doubles (Jaline Tay and Tiffany Fu) before Jasper won the final two matches, first the number three singles where Arya Gotoh fell 6-4, 3-6, 4-10 and the number two doubles team (Leah George and Sydney Cooper) lost 6-4, 5-7, 6-10.

The Bull Dogs then swept Penn 5-0 in the second round. Kathryn Wilson again was the first to finish at the number two singles, winning 6-0, 6-1, followed by Ashlie Wilson’s 6-2, 6-0 win at the number one singles.  Siri Poludasu played number three singles against Penn and was victorious 6-4, 6-2.  Number two doubles (Tay and Fu) won 7-5, 6-1 before the number two doubles team (George and Zoe Bishop) closed out the match with a 1-6, 6-2, 10-8 come-from-behind victory.

The final round of the day paired the Dogs with the host school Avon Orioles.  CN won all three singles matches (K Wilson 6-0, 6-0, A Wilson 6-0, 6-0, and Gotoh 6-3, 7-6) before dropping both doubles matches (Tay and Fu 3-6, 1-2 (Injury Retire), and George and Cooper 5-7, 7-6, 7-10).

The girls will travel to Southport on Monday, May 3 to take on Terre Haute South in a Conference Indiana matchup.  The match is scheduled to get underway at 5:45 pm.
