May 29, 2022 - The eleventh-ranked Golden Bears of Shelbyville put two runs on the board in the top half of the first inning, and that would prove to be all the runs they would need to upset sixth-ranked Columbus North in the Sectional championship game at Bloomington North. Shelbyville’s leadoff hitter pounded a home run off Bull Dog starter Maddi Rutan, and an error led to a second run for the Bears, giving them an early 2-0 lead. The Dogs put a run on the board in the top of the fourth inning, but were only able to muster three hits against Shelbyville.
Rutan scattered four hits and two walks while striking out six in the pitching circle. She threw 102 pitches, 74 of them for strikes in six innings of work.
The Dogs, who had beaten Shelbyville 2-0 in the regular season, finished their season 20-4 (4-1 in Conference Indiana).
