Columbus North edges East Central 40-35 in girls basketball

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Sophomore Alexa McKinley scored seven of her team-high 12 points in the second half Thursday evening (Dec. 6) to spark the Columbus North girls basketball team to a 40-35 victory over East Central in Memorial Gym.

                Junior Sierra Norman added nine points for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 6-3 for the season. Senior Nadia Lomax and junior Tessa Lomax each contributed six points, while junior Annie Anderson netted three points.

                Senior Logan Cox tallied a game-high 13 points for the visiting Trojans (6-4). Sophomore Kyla Maxwell provided nine points and junior Brilan McCory had seven points.

                McKinley scored five points while Nadia Lomax, Tessa Lomax and junior Kaylyn Bates each had two points in the first quarter as Columbus North took an 11-9 lead. Norman hit a 3-pointer and Tessa Lomax a deuce as the Bull Dogs held a 16-15 edge at intermission.

                McKinley scored five points, Norman netted three points and Tessa Lomax, Anderson and sophomore Madison White each had two points as CN pushed its edge to 35-30 at the third stop. Nadia Lomax scored four points, Norman three points, McKinley two points and Anderson one point as the hosts ultimately claimed the five-point decision.

                At the JV level, sophomore Hannah Bramlett scored seven of her team-high 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Bull Dogs prevailed 39-30. Sophomores Emily Herndon and Kanon Matsuno each added seven points for CN (8-1), while Laney Moore chipped in six points. Freshman Hope Fox scored 11 points and sophomore Charsan McCory had 10 points for East Central.

                In the freshman game against Whiteland, the visiting Warriors rallied from a seven-point deficit with three minutes to go in the fourth quarter and pulled out a 35-30 victory in overtime. Olivia Gieseking and Debbie Hill each scored eight points while Emily Reed had seven points for Whiteland. Alivia Steinkoenig netted a game-high 12 points for the Bull Dogs (3-2).

                Columbus North returns to action on Tuesday (Dec. 11) when it travels to Seymour and Ben Davis. The varsity and JV visit Seymour, the JV at 6 p.m. and the varsity to follow about 7:30 p.m. The freshman team plays at 6 p.m. at Ben Davis.
