Bloomington South edges Columbus North 57-54 in girls basketball to claim Conference Indiana championship

                BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Addy Blackwell scored 21 points Tuesday evening (Jan. 22) to lead the Bloomington South girls basketball team to a 57-54 victory over visiting Columbus North.

                Junior Lauren Conner added 18 points and sophomore Anya Friend had eight points for the Panthers, who improved to 18-3 overall and clinched the Conference Indiana championship at 5-0. Junior Kristen Ridner and junior Cameron Gillard each provided three points.

                Senior Nadia Lomax scored a game-high 22 points for the Bull Dogs, who fell to 16-6 overall and finished second in the conference at 4-1. Junior Tessa Lomax contributed 14 points, while junior Sierra Norman netted eight points and sophomore Alexa McKinley had six points.

                Conner scored 11 points in the first quarter as Bloomington South took an 18-14 lead. Blackwell tallied 10 points in the second quarter as the hosts pushed their edge to 37-29 at intermission.

                Tessa Lomax scored six points, Nadia Lomax had five points and McKinley swished four free throws in the third period as CN cut its deficit to 47-44. Friend hit a key fourth-quarter 3-pointer while Conner sank two free throws and Blackwell made one free throw to allow Bloomington South to hold on down the stretch.

                Sophomore Kanon Matsuno dropped in a driving left-handed layup with about three seconds remaining to lift Columbus North to a 35-33 victory in the JV game. Matsuno and sophomore Emily Herndon each finished with eight points for the Bull Dogs (17-1), while sophomores Madison White and Hannah Bramlett each added six points. Freshman Kendall Harmon scored a game-high 16 points and classmate Alannah Deckard had nine points for the Panthers.

                In Indianapolis, Carly DeCastro scored 13 points and Sara Borland tallied 10 points as host Bishop Chatard beat Columbus North 43-20 in a freshman game. Alivia Steinkoening scored 11 points for the Bull Dogs, who dropped to 8-4.

                Columbus North returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 24) when the varsity and JV visits Roncalli for a doubleheader and the freshman team plays the Indian Creek JV. The JV game at Roncalli starts at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow at about 7:30 p.m. The CN freshman play at Indian Creek at 6 p.m.
