Roncalli knocks off Columbus North 51-43 in girls basketball

                INDIANAPOLIS – Sophomore Maddie Bischoff scored 22 points and junior Alana Vinson chipped in 17 points Thursday evening (Jan. 24), leading the Roncalli girls basketball team to a 51-43 triumph over visiting Columbus North.

                Sophomore Abbie Carr contributed four points, while junior Ellie Hammerschmitt netted three points as the Rebels completed their regular season at 14-6. Senior Amanda Prather and senior Anna Bauer each had two points for the hosts.

                Sophomore Alexa McKinley and junior Sierra Norman each scored 11 points to pace the Bull Dogs, who dropped their third consecutive game and fell to 16-7. Senior Nadia Lomax provided 10 points, and sophomore Madison White netted five points.

                McKinley scored six points in the first quarter as CN overcame a slow start for a 14-13 edge at the first stop. Bischoff scored six points in the second quarter while Nadia Lomax had five points for CN as Roncalli took a 26-24 lead at intermission.

                Vinson scored four points and Bischoff sank a 3-pointer in the third quarter as the Rebels pushed their advantage to 36-33. Vinson went 8-of-8 from the free throw line while Bischoff hit one field goal and added 3-of-3 free throws as the hosts closed out the decision in the final period. A Nadia Lomax 3-pointer drew CN within 44-41 in the late going, but two Vinson free throws, a Bischoff three-point play and two more Bischoff free throws sealed the outcome.

                At the JV level, sophomore Hannah Bramlett scored 11 points – including three late free throws – to help the Bull Dogs post a 33-29 victory. Sophomore Emily Herndon chipped in seven points, and White contributed six points for CN (18-1). Junior Kenzie Ross paced the Rebels with 11 points and freshman Abbey Scheil had seven points.

                In Trafalagar, the Columbus North freshman team dropped a 52-41 decision to the Indian Creek JV. Emily Todor scored a game-high 15 points while Alyssa Pruitt netted nine points for the Braves. Alivia Steinkoenig and Paige Osbourne each tallied 10 points for the Bull Dogs (8-5).

                The Columbus North freshmen return to action on Saturday (Jan. 26) when they host the CN Freshman Invitational. The Bull Dogs will face Center Grove in Gym 1 and Whiteland will meet Bloomington South in Gym 2 at 9 a.m. In the second round, CN will play Bloomington South in Gym 1 and Whiteland will face Center Grove in Gym 2.

                The season is now complete for the Bull Dogs’ JV.

                The Columbus North varsity is back in action about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 29) when it faces Shelbyville in the first round of the Columbus East Sectional. Bloomington North and East Central play in the opening sectional game that day at 6 p.m.
